They're talking about his death though, so it sounds more like he's going to die trying.

It really depends on how one defines life and death.

It could be that Zaros succeeds, gains a new form, and his old body dies (like how Sliske 'died' but lives on in our mind).

It could be that Zaros succeeds, but he's only a part of the resulting elder god (like how Eluned 'died' if you used her to make Seren).

He could succeed and then die.

He could die in the process.

He could physically die, but abandon his body like the last time he 'died.' (Heck, the line could be referring back to the first time Zaros died, with the intense flame referring to Zamorak's determination and the lifting sadness being Zammy realizing he actually did it)

It could be that elder gods simply aren't considered 'alive' by Harold's death sense.

Prophecies are always about the technicalities.

No it was very clearly talking about the future.

Death: I feel a burning as hot as a star, and then a giant blackness. I feel a prolonged sadness that has come to an end.

This could mean he succeeds but the part about a giant blackness and that it's DEATH saying this makes it clear he dies in the attempt.
We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

I feel like it alludes to him succeeding but his success walks hand-in-hand with his downfall. I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Again, not necessarily. There's nothing to indicate that it is necessarily describing a future event, just the assumption that it is. You are also completely ignoring that, depending on how you define being 'dead' and being 'alive,' there are quite a few ways he can succeed or fail without completely ceasing his existence.

Once again, prophecies like this are all about the technicalities, and that goes for all the deaths Harold foresaw, not just Zaros's.

I agree with Hguoh in that there are many ways in which it could be interpreted.

What I find most likely is that depending on player choice he is either killed by the Gods, thus ending the sadness of Mah, or ascends to an Elder God, becoming a different being. Again ending the suffering of Mah.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

Didn't Seren already end the suffering of Mah? ;) Too soon?

I mean regarding Zaros being a part of Mah. Although this would mean that Seren would have to die before Zaros. To put it simply we don't have enough information and can only speculate.

I'm thinking Jas wasn't the only one to lay an egg.

He can certainly continue his goal, and there are at least 4 more chances.

I wonder what he's gone looking for though?

(I haven't finished the quest, so I apologize if I'm missing details here)

I know that Bik art was just a concept, but perhaps Zaros will actually appear in that quest? Or perhaps he'll try to do more with the Core of Mah.

If Seren successfully outmaneuvers Zaros, this happens:

Zaros: No. The stone should be mine! It is vital to my...
Seren: I know know why you need it brother, which is exactly why I have taken it from you.

Seems like he wanted to use the stone to ascend. And while the stone might be gone, Lethal is right, there's a few more eggs he could potentially use laying around somewhere.
