Personally I think Ashdale's been a pretty good tutorial lore-wise ever since Stu straightened it up to not reference the 6th age anymore. It even has some nice foreshadowing towards the Dragonkin.

I don't really think it's restricting either. The people on the island know you, but beyond that there's nothing that says you were born on Ashdale, is from Gielinor, or any of those things you didn't like about it. The only "restriction" on the player's origin is that we've been there for some time and know some of the people there.

Anyway back to Kindred Spirits:

If you read the lore books you see Sliske's been studying the nature of the soul, which appears to be biological rather than divine in nature. He even has a book written by one of the magisters of Terragard, who theorises that a soul could theoretically be transplanted. His blackboard has pictures of a mahjarrat (likely himself) along with soul runes and chemical equations. Now before I continue look at these quotes from Sliske's journal

He called them the World Guardian. They will be the key to unlock complete chaos across all of Gielinor.
We're not as similar as I had hoped, are we? It won't work unless I can make them more... compatible.
[There are assorted diagrams that looks like a person, but with something coming out of them.] I have a plan. It might work, it might be the solution to my little problem. I have most of the pieces right here and the rest I can easily obtain with only the slightest bit of subterfuge. Yes it will work.
They'll have no idea what my real goal is until it's far too late.

Basically, Sliske has been trying this entire time to make our soul more compatible with his. He wants to take our soul, all of it, and make it part of himself. Why he wants our soul is up for debate, though I personally think he wants our anti-god powers, but it's clear this has been his goal for some time.

I have noticed your kind does tend to blindly stumble forward towards danger simply because it exists. What is your word for that?
- We call it being a hero.

This entire quest, heck it might run back longer than this quest, he's been trying to make us more compatible with him. He makes us share an experience in the dungeon, makes us torture the barrows brother and so on, all so that our souls are compatible. The soul, you see, is made up of experiences.

But then we see something we shoulnd't have. No, I'm not talking about his conversation with his "master", his "plans" were revealed to the player when we looked into the focus... But not to us. When Sliske sees this he becomes so enraged that he snaps, he kicks the absolute living **** out of us. He doesn't use magic or the soa, he punches us to a pulp because he has to prove just how little we are to him, just how angry he is. He doesn't kill us because, well, that'd attract the attention of Harold.

Other Notes:

Soul runes are probably needed because either A: He doesn't want our soul to control him, or B: He needs the space...

A popular theory is that Sliske is incredibly afraid of death (ironic considering the wight thing), and wants to ensure he can't die. He's already a mahjarrat, he lives for thousands of years, he has the powerful elder artifacts, but the gods... The gods could ***** him away with a flick of their glowy fingers, so he needs protection. Maybe his master is a god he'd like to get rid of?

See personally I dislike respawning being canon. I'm fine with the explanation, it's not that it doesn't make sense, but I just feel like it devalues the story. Hazelmere rescuing us, Akrisae sacrifising himself, all those deaths... Are meaningless because we can just respawn. -

Being a god also makes you a much bigger target, and you don't get an afterlife. Of course, Mahjarrat presumably don't go to an afterlife either, but with a human soul.... Who knows? Bottom line is he wants our soul. What he wants it for is pure speculation.

As for why they reveal something to the character and not to us... It's to build suspense. Jagex aren't going to reveal his plans until endgame, but it makes sense that they'd be in his home, wouldn't it?

Sliske raging out kind of makes sense when you realise that we don't really know him. He's putting on a play for everyone and he's a schemer, but beneath that mask, do we really know who he is? He couldn't keep up the playful attitude forever, eventually he'd snap (which is something quite a few people predicted).
