We know how the multiverse is laid out, but I'm confused at what Jagex defines "universe", "plane", "realm", "dimension", "world", and "planet" to be. All of these terms have been used to describe the various worlds in the multiverse such as Gielinor, Freneskae, New Domina, Infernus, Yu'biusk, and so on.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure that most of the worlds are actually just PLANETS floating around in space, and are not entire "universes" on their own. Consider Armadyl's comment during Missing, Presumed Death:

Need I remind you of how they obliterated the planet Kethsi near my homeworld? You will be just one more to suffer the consequences.

Armadyl clearly defines Kethsi to be a planet. Abbinah must also be a planet, because how else will Kethsi be nearby?

It's obvious to me that aside from the Abyss (which is confirmed to be the space between dimensions), all of the "worlds" mentioned thus far are mere planets. Not separate planes of existence. Not pocket dimensions or realms or anything. Planets floating in space.

There is a difference between the plane of Gielinor and Gielinor the planet. There are different planes of existence, with potentially wildly different physical laws. But what we know as worlds are generally planets that inhabit those planes. In some cases one plane might have more than one planet. So Teragard is a planet that inhabits a plane of its own, while Kethis and Abbinah are on the same plane (or otherwise visible to each other trough the abyss) and so on.

Planes are the canvases upon which the worlds are painted.

I see. So are you saying that each planet is in its own pocket dimension or something similar?

Think of a plane as a galaxy. There are many planets and stars within.

Realms and dimensions are where RuneScape's equivalent of string theory would apply.

This is a confusing thing because for years jagex has called other worlds by loads of different words. For the longest time they basically called everything its own dimension, its only since the missing presumed death quest that they begun using the word "planet" to describe worlds

The way i understand it is like this. Each world is a planet/moon in the universe/galaxy "runescape". The abyss is basically "outer space". Now this is slightly different from the ingame location "the abyss" used by runecrafters. This location is still in space but is a rift of sorts created by zaros from the demon hostilus and works as a teleport nexus of sorts to allow for quick travel through the universe. Realms are also planets or maybe locations on other known planets in some cases. Planes i always assumed to be another word for realm but it seems to now indicate a patch of space that could contain planets within it. This of it like a quadrant of space that contains a solar system that contains planet worlds

Different dimensions are something rather different, and slightly more complicated. The universe you play in could be called "the material dimension", but there are others connected to it such as the afterlife or the spirit realm (i'll have to double check this one, still not sure about it). Then there are things like the dimension of disaster which are complete alternate/parallel universes, similar to the main universe in structure but their story turned out slightly different

It was Zamorak who cast Hostilius and the other Chthonians into the Abyss, not Zaros.

We don't know why the portals to the runecrafting Altars are there. My personal theory was that enough of Hostilius was still alive to try and pull itself into Gielinor so it could consume and regenerate, and that it was using the runecrafting altars as metaphorical handholds for 'gripping' the plane.

Ohh zammy made the abyss teleport place? Just did some looking up on the wiki and it seems zaros did a similar kind of thing with loarnab in the dimension of disaster, thats probably what i was thinking of

The planes are not just names for different areas/sectors of the same physical space. They are, as the name would apply, different planes of existence, as the planar gallery and this tweet makes clear.

For a time it seemed like Jagex were moving away from their planar model to a more planetary one, but it's clear they've adopted it once again (see Guthixian memorial - Elder Sword echo). In the recent Runefest forum thread Mod Stu even posited that different planes can have different physical laws.

The abyss is not just outer space either, if anything it'd be analogous to warp/hyperspace.

Hmm well i actually made that picture specifically to move away from the whole "everythings another dimension" thing and to make a genuine universe. Infact if you look at the full picture you'll see that all the worlds are infact made to be planets. Plus with how they've started referring to worlds as planets/moons now (such as how he did on stream) i think its still safe to say they've moved to the planet model for the worlds atleast. Even if you say that each solar system is in its own bubble of "a plane" it still doesnt make too much difference, they still seem to be moving to calling worlds planets now. If there is some kind of layer then maybe its just a membrane of magic to make each solar system slightly more hospitable than the really deep space inbetween. I mean if you think about it, our solar system is basically in its own little finite bubble of a gravitational field holding our planets together

Zaros used Loarnab as a portal in our world. The Loarnab in Dimension of Disaster largely took Zaros's place in that universe's history, doing many of the things Zaros did. In the end, he was also betrayed by Zamorak and (due to not being t2) could not abandon his body and was killed.
