We had an interesting talk today in Lore FC about the amulets Zilyana was given by Saradomin to tilt the Battle of the Godsword in her favor.

The amulets first appeared after Zilyana prayed to Saradomin for guidance or favor to help her win the battle. Mysteriously the next morning, the amulets began to appear. Clearly Zilyana's prayers had been answered!

...Or had they? We know for a fact that prayer does not in fact have anything to do with the gods. Quite literally, prayers by followers are heard on the deaf ears of their patron god(s). Suspicious, then, that Saradomin would magically know of Zilyana's prayers.

Of course, this was after all the Battle of the Godsword: arguably the most pivotal battle at that point in the God Wars, so perhaps Saradomin had been observing (wouldn't be the first time he'd spied on Zilyana, see Annakarll.) But on the flip side, Saradomin is known for getting into the nitty-gritty of things and overseeing or communicating with people directly. The change of pace seems a little uncharacteristic of Saradomin, especially after Zilyana destroyed the first batch of amulets for being heretical.

Basically that's a summary of what we talked about and covered. I want to hear your own theories and ideas.

DISCUSS!

It was Saradomin.

-He is overseeing multiple generals, sitting on the Stone of Jas, and dealing with domestic life. There's a lot of crap he has to juggle.

-The amulets are way too powerful. Only a God would have been able to produce them--let alone such a high quantity of them.

-Saradomin only showed up directly at Annakarl because that was the only way to transport Zilyana to the stone and heal her.

-Saradomin is the only one who has to gain from helping Saradomin get the God Sword.

-Gods can communicate telepathically with their followers. Regardless of whether prayer itself is necessary, it's clear from Zaros that it can be used to communicate with them. Whether there's limits to this is unknown.

Sliske. Nuff said. He loves causing ruckus. He was tinkering around with the Ashuelot Reis and got her to free Nex, who was original trapped in her prison thanks to the combined strength of all 4 other gods. It is logical he would want to mess around with the generals, too. Sliske probably spawned it in front of Zilyana from the Shadow Realm.

if it was saradomin, he would quite likely have ... made it obvious that it was him

especially so because she's his favourite general, and she's fighting one of the most important battles (if not the most) of the entire war
(I'm going to guess that there was a slightly more important one that saradomin was at personally, unless the gods were all just having tea and had agreed to mostly stay out of it)

and this does have sliske written all over it. He wants them to keep fighting... without those amulets the saradominists may have become too weak to continue
or, my opinion, the amulets caused a great deal of distrust between allied factions (she very quickly turns on kree-arra) and that would definitely weaken all sides

Sliske makes absolutely no sense.

-The amulets are way beyond his power. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Saradomin had to use the SoJ in conjunction with his own power to get it done.

-He has nothing to gain from it. At all. All he's doing is ending the fighting and giving Saradomin an edge.

-He was still Zarosian at the time. Even if he could somehow make all these amulets, he would have given them to Nex.

-This goes off a crazy assumption that somehow Saradomin can't hear Zilly's prayers...but Sliske can. That or he has the most insane luck in the world when it comes to timing.

-Saradomin would have intervened if Sliske was screwing around and tricking his followers in his name.

Have I ever mentioned how much I despise Necrovarus' notes? Well that's probably a rant for another time.

Anyway:

- I really have to question how Necrovarus somehow knows all this stuff about prayer. I understand that he could have studied spirits and seen how they give power to the living, but he's just jumping to conclusions with all the other stuff. The dead aren't necessarily the only source of prayer power. It is fully possivle that gods are another source and that our favourite dead easterner just doesn't believe it. (Yes, I am aware that this was most likely not Jagex's intent when they wrtoe the notes)
- Even if the gods are not a source of prayer power, it is still fully possible that they're able to communicate with their followers telepathically (something we see ol'Sara do in DoC) and otherwise sense their thoughts.
- The event prior to Sliske's endgame strongly implies that Saradomin is able to sense people praying to him.
- Even if the gods can't sense prayers they're still able to watch over a location from afar, like how Zamorak knew what was happening in Sliske's without being present during DaT.
- As for why Saradomin wouldn't teleport in and show himself... Like you said the battle of the godsword was one of the most pivotal battles at that point of the war. If he teleported in he'd risk alerting the other gods who were most likely watching. And what happens if another god notices? You risk a god battle on your hands, and you don't want to ruin everything with WMDs... Much easier to just sneak a few items of power in to tip the scales.

Actually for all we know he could have been fighting the other gods at that point and just used a little power to teleport the amulets in. Sort of like how he creates a proxy for DoC while fighting Zamorak.

Going to reply to this one because it encompasses most other people's points. Anyway:

-In addition to Necro's notes, we also know the Zarosian Curses come from the dead (originally I believe it was Mahjarrat Spirits but that doesn't make sense with new lore.) Fully possible that the Gods are in fact another source of prayer power but this has never really been talked about in Lore.

-Then why would Saradomin just not say "Hey, use the amulets on the other people and you can mind control them!"

-I have no counterpoint to this, but I also don't know exactly what events you're speaking of.

-Fair point, as I brought up in the OP.

-Any plethora of reasons could explain why he wasn't there directly and yours make perfect sense. No argument other than that we don't know.
