I had a thought, and I want to share it and get some opinions:).

Souls are born and move on to the Afterlife when the body dies, but some choose reincarnation. New body and no memory of the previous life is what typically happens. And so the cycle continues for them.

Yet we also know that Amascut was involved in helping souls to reincarnate, unless she went completely bughouse nuts. now she is doing everything she can to disrupt the Afterlife and devour the souls.

But what would happen to a soul that goes back though the mess that Gielinor's Afterlife now is?
What if the Afterlife is in far more of a mess that we've been led to believe?
Would they forget as normal?
Would they remember?
Just how bad would souls remembering who they were be?
Might they just pop back as they were just before they died?

Can you see where I am going with this yet?

Once upon a time there was an Adventurer. They died. They chose reincarnation. But something went horribly wrong, something they figured let them survive it. They remember everything. And instead of being reborn...

They respawned.

And it keeps happening. And they still remember, but not perfectly. Though most of the 5th Age comes as flashbacks as real today as it must have been then. They were not chosen. They adapted. They forged their own path and wrote their story. With a small but critical advantage that just kept them ahead of the game.

They are the Adventurer. Could this be our story?

Ghosts are dead souls that hung on and didn't go to the Afterlife as well, right? They had something else to do before they could move on, which could be the case for the Adventurer's reincarnation. Haluned discovered about us in the First Age during Meeting History, relaying the information to Seren and Guthix which confirmed the Amserdrwys works. And Guthix met us directly in the Third Age during The Light Within, and he sensed that he made us the World Guardian in our own timeline. This would have given him a reason to relay the information to Death, and to tell him to reincarnate us if we die in the line of duty as we are needed for his work. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

Interestingly - Slightly off topic - but current lore on reincarnation seems to have done a retcon 180 on who gets to be reincarnated. Senliten tells us that most people are reincarnated, and only the worthy get in to the afterlife; More recently we've been told that it's the worthy few who get to be reincarnated, and most go on to the afterlife.

From a meta perspective, this change in lore is interesting, placing different values on remaining in this world as opposed to entering the next. One wonders what it tells us about the Jagex writers involved.

Based on this dialogue from Death:

'It is not your time. Destiny awaits you. I will not claim you. Yet.'

We never really got to choose between reincarnation and afterlife. Death himself refused to separate our soul from our body (or at least not permanently). How we get a brand new body (we do leave behind bones after all) is a mystery though.

Death is bound by the laws of Fate itself. It isn't our time, Death isn't refusing to separate our souls from our body, he can't take our souls from our body.

We bury our own bones on a regular basis, someone even had our bones and was stalking us. That says something about bodies and severing souls right there.

When a body dies, Death has to come along and separate the soul from the body, or it stays tethered to it. Well while all the hubbub of MPD was going on there is one thing no one considered, and something else no one compared it with.

Our own multiple deaths. Though Death can come and drags us to his office, I get the feeling that we are not tethered to the body. Strictly speaking, I think, that necessity probably ended the first time Death came to claim us. Which if you read into the overall story of RS, well we may have done more than play dead to our past when we came back as the Adventurer, first setting out in 5th Age Lumbridge.

Hahaha, maybe we're Death's apprentice!:P

(Edit: To clarify a living reaper could kill anyone that needs killing, Death being dead, is bound by the Afterlife rules for the deceased)
