In my quest to reduce this game to a cheap psychological thriller, I bring you the epic sequel to my "Sixth Age is a lie" thread. Spoilers for Kindred Spirits, and by extension the rest of the game, follow.

Kindred Spirits has been released, and while it is an excellent quest chock-full of lore, its most significant -- dare I say, game-changing -- aspect lies in its exploration of the relationship between the World Guardian and Sliske.

The quest itself features Sliske reeling us in with an elaborate hoax, and proceeding to engage in some Saw-esque "games" -- tests of character, specifically for the Barrows brothers. But it is all for our benefit; in truth, it is the player character who is being tested. Sliske recognizes us as the catalyst for change. He comes to us to shake up the oh-so-tedious world of Gielinor. In Kindred Spirits, we are the sole object of Sliske's attention... the center of his entire universe, it seems.

The "Death at Sea" book reveals why: Sliske has been aware of us for a while now, our existence being prophesied by a mind taken hold of by Xau-Tak. He's had 3 ages to obsess over the riddle our name presented -- ages that whittled away at his already unhinged personality. What kind of person, what kind of hero, what kind of blackguard could possibly challenge the mind-shattering power of this unspeakable horror? Given Sliske's mental state, one can only imagine the damage that could be caused by such a puzzle -- over countless years, no less. Consider the viciousness of a downward spiral into horrifying introspection, and further still into stark insanity...

Sliske has dedicated his life to searching for us, hearing of our deeds and misdeeds both real and imagined, mythologizing our existence in his head. He has committed countless acts of heroism and villainy, desperately attempting to match his idol's ability to shape history.

Kindred Spirits is the boldest manifestation of his obsession. The quest constantly asks what kind of World Guardian you are: "How do you respond?" The answer, of course, is meaningless. As the player character, we are every kind of World Guardian: good, evil, everything in between. This duality in the World Guardian's nature is acknowledged by what remains of Sliske's frayed consciousness, in the form of his bipolar masks: happy and sad, light and shadow, comedy and tragedy... good and evil. Unsure of the morality of his prophesied hero, Sliske is forced to tear himself apart -- much like Verac in the quest -- as he attempts to emulate the highest points of both heroism and villainy simultaneously, further fracturing his psyche.

His mind, now very obviously in tatters, is the end result of this ceaseless and obsessive cycling between awe and envy: a jumbled mess of adventures, chores and miscellaneous exploits that are repeated ad nauseam. It is, in essence, a schizophrenic biography of his imagined hero... but we simply refer to it as RuneScape.

Sliske is us and we are his Kurt*. God have mercy.

The horror! The horror!

Reserved. Post away, fellow figments of Sliske's imagination.

EDIT1: As Pizzahatt1 pointed out, it's worth noting that we mentioned our name to the First Age settlers in Meeting History, potentially cementing our nominal significance in RuneScape's timeline even before Xau-Tak's prophecy. All the more reason for Sliske's obsession.

EDIT2: sir eos lee phrased the question elegantly enough for me to copy it in the OP.

Sliske was given the punchline to a joke several thousand years too early.

In the end, I do wonder: is Sliske the joke and the World Guardian the punchline?

Tragic indeed. That you'd actually believe this ludicrous, unfounded, insubstantial, crack-pot theory would mea-
Oh you were talking about me.

Why not both? :^)

Although if I were to be serious for a moment, I actually take this theory relatively seriously, if for no other reason than the literary allusion.

What would you even call this sort of obsession about one person in particular, being in such awe that it changes your entire outlook on the world?
