Hey lorehounds!

I'm looking for ways to explain the OSRS world being an alternate (slightly-altered) universe, thus allowing some OSRS content to deviate from RuneScape 3's lore... and I thought you guys would be the perfect people to ask :)

To be specific, we're looking for some way to explain both the existence and altering of an alternate dimension. The difference between the two would have effects in both the past and present of OSRS; for example, maybe Sliske doesn't even exist in OSRS (past), and Guthix never is assassinated (future). As OSRS and RuneScape 3 have many similarities, the initial difference in them would have to be somewhat small (such as Jas sneezing when he created the first one, accidentally creating another slightly different one).

A few things we've thought of are:

- Jas creating another universe before they destroy everything
- Some magical force duplicates the universe during the tectonic movement that unfroze the God Wars (or the same magical force that caused the tectonic movement)
- When Saradomin accidentally copy/pasted the Stone of Jas instead of cut/pasting it, he also copied the universe (unbeknownst to him)

Do any of those seem both feasible and believable to you? Do you have any ideas that'd be better?

Thanks a lot, and happy 'Scaping!

Well it as an either or, situation. I wonder, has anyone considered that split that opened the GWD could have been caused by the realties parting ways. Because with Dimension is Disaster, that is 3 parallel realties and not just 2.

One) with No World Guardian, No God War and not much of anything else going on. . It just has stuff. Ii has bad guys. It has trout. OSRS

Two) They had a God Wars dungeon open, then we had a god war kick off and the rise of the World Guardian and what is slowly looking to more likely an Awakening Anima Mundi. Which is going to be a bitterly nasty surprise for the Elder Gods and their plans. Oh with a cast of Anima produced and tweaked lifeforms popping up. The gods in full riot mode playing whack-a-mole with each others heads.. Dragonkin running amok turning into hideous mutants. Vampyres desperate to chew on tasty Misthalin necks. Enormous crystal cities the size of most kingdoms. The player invades the eastern land to cut down all their bamboo. And the general lunacy that is Gower Quest. RS3

Three) The GDW opened. No meddler anywhere in sight. Everyone dies...? Well maybe not quiet but the world does go to hell in a handbasket of evil lunatics. That is until the meddler from world 2 (us) decides to invade world 3 to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and we're fresh out of bubble gum. Just because it's fun! Dimension of Disaster.

When you ask the question, what caused the split, well, I think you'd first have to answer why the split happened. Random chance, or a reason?

It's canon to Runescape like how RWBY Chibi and Teen Titans Go are canon to RWBY and TT. It's not meant to make sense lorewise.

Hello, Dimension of Disaster?

OSRS is just another alternate dimension, except this is a dimension where the Catalyst was never found, the Dragonkin were never awoken, and Guthix's chambers were never uncovered.
OSRS is what happens when there's no Sixth Age.
A
World Guardian
must learn to find
Balance
in themselves.
Only then can they
Control
themselves and forge their own
Fate.

I heard, though it maybe speculation on the JMod's behalf, that OSRS is what would have happened if the GWD was never discovered.
This is flawed considering that it was discovered anyways and I doubt a continent would appear out of nowhere because some guys didn't feel like getting attacked by trolls on a hike through the mountains.

I guess the only difference the Jmods took into account was that RS3 is focused on the return of the gods and their followers. Meanwhile, OSRS continues on with its traditional medieval hero adventures. As you mentioned, that doesn't explain all the differences.

But this observation has made me wonder. Does Gielinor's culture in OSRS differ from that of RS3?

In RS3, is it common conversation to talk about whether the adventurer occupation is coming to a decline? Are there adventurers who miss the "golden days" when champions would boast about their slaying of others in the Wilderness? Has adventuring become pointless due to all the opportunities exclusive only to those who "hunt treasure" for the royals?
The legendary creators have been long gone from this world. When they return, they'll be surprised and angered of their creations' new sapience. Meanwhile, the world's most elite, summoned to be its guardians, have abandoned their purpose and intend to plunge the world into chaos. -- Bionicle or RS?

Well then let's look at the nifty gritty bits.

Mad scientist hat time: The big split could have happened for any amount of reasons, there is a lot of junk in the abyss, why does it all have to be physically in our reality, since that place is some sort of garbage dump. Everything tends towards disorder, which is hard to do if it "doesn't really exist" as a reality at that time. So an alternate would give it an outlet to do so.

The discovery of the GWD was stuttered at the very least, at a different time. An event happening at another time can have very different consequences. If other people found it first destiny can go down divergent paths. Someone gets rich and sails into the unknown and find a new continent way off the beaten path, while in the other world that person only found a few trinkets as other were there first.

The Eastern Lands maybe known in one and not the other, or other difrfering factors. The uncharts isle has more islands than anyone wants to count. That does not mean that both worlds have that. Maybe in one there is no islands just a continent instead.

The Godsword could have been stolen in one and not the other. That would be quiet a differing ripple.

The GE came later as did Phats and other such things. while that is due to when OSRS was released, in game theory, the lack of rares at the time of the GEs founding could also have had economic consequences. The knock-on effect changing that would have cannot be understated,

Different places were uncovered. Different ways to train were made. Combat never evolved so would be monsters that would have been slaughtered in one can thrive in the other and Guthix maybe have thought the people simply were not ready to face the gods and so kept sleeping, so the wolrd never awoke.

Elf city remains just a theory? Or comes at a different political time?

A lot of people, when they think about an alternate universe, will think 'this wold, but with one detail changed somewhere in its timeline which causes more changes'. If alternate universe are a thing, why wouldn't there be one (or an infinite amount, rather) where multiple things are changed over the course of their timeline, not based on a single change

so... the gwd was discovered later, leading to several changes... but at the same time, zeah exists in this universe in a way that's completely unrelated to the first change

It would actually be fairly unlikely for universes to only have one change unless that change was incredibly miniscule and right at the beginning of that universe (and ofcourse, fairly unlikely doesnt mean there still wouldnt be an infinite amount of them, it's just mean that if you could travel to them, it would take ages before you'd find this very one like that)
