With EoC and surge spells, ancient magics seem to be rendered useless and a waste of money compared to normal book spells.

Is there an occasion when you find ancient magic spells more useful?

I always use ancients. The cost is insignificant, and the effects are well worth it in most cases. ice spells can reduce incoming damage from several types of enemies by keeping them away from you for an extra second, blood can extend your supplies through healing, smoke and shadow both improve survivability though damage reduction.

Only real advantage to the normal book is vulnerability.

No, from a training point of view, if you can afford it anceint magicks are (were? I dont track anymore) an extremely viable method of training. From a point of view for damage they are also useful although normal magic has its uses too. “I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another.”

Pretty useless in low tier slayer unless the monster is specifically weak to ancients (muspah) and vuln>ancient. If you're somewhere where you can afk, you're already not at a food risk so you don't need blood healing and you want monsters as aggro as possible so ice is bad there.

When you get to bosses, especially group bosses, you don't need 20 people doing vuln so someone with ice on jellyfish or blood/smoke/shadow from the tank or etc can be nice.

Nah, they're really useful for the multi-target spells and as said above I use them in tandem with legacy auto cast sometimes for afk xp.

They still have limited uses in PvP as well, although let's be honest, all people used them for before EOC was Ice spells anyways :P

I get what you all are starting about the special effects.

However, with the introduction of abilities, the actual spell is rarely cast and I hardly see the effects at all. It seems like the spell chosen itself is virtually inconsequential, as the only thing that matters is accuracy and damage given to the abilities by the magical weapon.

ya the spell itself as autocast isnt used very often (with exception of 4taa), but 99% sure at least blood spells will still heal u even with use of abils & afaik ice barrage only rly used for golems at high enrage telos for minions, dunno if any1 ever uses smoke/shadow Probably afking | selling various spawns/unlocks, check QFC: 201-202-259-66028653
