1.3 - How does Hijacking happen?

There are many ways a Hijacker can get a hold of the information used to hijack your account.

Malicious Websites:

A Malicious website is a type of website that contains Malware that can
easily be downloaded onto your computer the instant you visit it.
These types of websites are designed to
steal your information. Even if you donít enter any information on these websites,
the Malware including a keylogger
could easily record any keystrokes that are executed by you.
If you come across these, please report them to Jagex at
reportphishing@jagex.co≠m

Lookalike Website:

These websites are
designed to look like the real thing
, so people are fooled into entering their information. If you come across these, please report them to Jagex at
reportphishing@jagex.co≠m

Malicious Email:

Hackers will send
random people
emails that they try to make look like were from Jagex. Jagex will
never
email you about the status of your account or to ever offer you Mod Status. They do this through the
Message Centre
. If you come across these emails, please report them to Jagex at
reportphishing@jagex.co≠m

1.4 - How does Hijacking happen? Continued.

URL Spoofing:

It's possible to embed any link into any text. However this also means that you can make the text look like any url.

Example,

https://secure.runescape.com/m=weblogin/loginform.ws?mod=www&ssl=0&dest=community

It looks like it's going to a secure log in page for RuneScape when in fact it's really going to the Security: Fake Websites Support page at
https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115001258085
instead.

Hijackers use this method in hopes that you will only be paying attention to the url you see on your screen and not exactly where the url is taking you.

Always check where a link is taking you by hovering your cursor over it and looking at the very bottom of you screen (either to the left or the right) before clicking on any links.

for more information

Keyloggers:

A keylogger is a type of Malware
designed to record every keystroke a person executes and send that information back to the hijacker.

Weak Passwords:

Hijackers will sometimes try to guess a personís
password
, so
always make sure itís a strong one.
A strong
password
consists of
both numbers and letters and does not include any words in the dictionary. It is also best to update your
password
every few months or so.

If you receive an e-mail from

Received: from
mt≠a.cheetahmail.co≠m

From: RuneScape
@email.runescape.co≠m

All legitimate RuneScape emails will come from a
@email.runescape.co≠m
address however
it is still possible to 'spoof' this address,
so please make sure you are still vigilant and
check the email header information.
