I remember back in the early days of the GE someone actually did something akin to this (I think it was with fishing potions). They basically bought out pretty much all fishing potions in the game to the point of exhaustion and the price started increasing sharply. I think Jagex took action against them. Perhaps someone remember the details better.

Merchanting clans. There were clan chats dedicated to raising the prices on items. The leaders would get together and buy out a bunch of items, then they would tell the rest of the unranked clan members what the item was. After it had risen a lot, the leaders would dump their stock on the unranked members of the clan and other RS players that just needed the items, and then the clan chat leaders would tell their follows to dump after they already had. Repeated this process for a while and there were multiple clans doing this. Just a pyramid scheme. You also had to pay quite a bit of gold to the clan leaders to get a ranked spot to find out the item earlier than the other players.


Yeah that was also very common but the one I'm talking about was a single person.
