That's why Jagex is smart to have their official user communication through the company provided mail box instead of the player's private email address..

I have played since 2001 but I never even clicked a link said to be, or appeared to be from Jagex in any of my emails. I only check the Jagex Message Box integrated into my Jagex games.

It's easy to call something obvious when you already have the knowledge/experience. Not everyone has that background, and asking for help when you're not sure about something has my respect. Kudos at wings & OP.

That's why I mentioned
"I only check the Jagex Message Box integrated into my Jagex games."

I think everybody should know this is how Jagex communicate withe their players officially. There can be a "new" scam everyday but they are nothing newer than something like "you are chosen to be a Pmod due to your maturity... blah blah blah" as long as they don't come from Jagex's in game Messages. :)

Well, phishing emails aren't exactly new, but they are currently going around again. While it's an old trick, the emails do get changed based on what works and what doesn't. Some of the emails going around at this moment are quite convincing if you aren't that familiar with phishing emails.

To give an example of what phishing emails look like these days:

I've been getting this phishing from couple of the emails runescape is using. I've send report but I have yet to hear something from them. so if their email got hacked or for w/e reasons I'm getting those emails from the emails runescape is using I'd like to have heads up from them rather than having to wait and see what happens to my account.

Don't worry, Jagex's email isn't hacked.

The 'from' address on an email is trivially easy to fake, so never rely on that to judge the authenticity of an email. Always examine the contents of the email, in particular the real destination of any links it contains.

There's advice on recognising phishing websites and emails here:
