Returning player here. Iíve always been a forums lurker but donít post a lot. There is a lot less activity on here than I remember which is too bad. I love reading random threads while I grind, better than movies etc. for me.

I have a few random thoughts about problems I see with the forums and possible changes that might help.

I think there are too many sub forums. Having 38 RS3 sub forums when itís rare to see more than 20 people online spreads the already small number of users out way too thin. Reducing the number of sub forums down to something like what OSRS has would be better.

Lots of sub forums do have the benefit of better organization, and this would be lost with fewer of them. A potential fix to this would be to add a tag field to the threads to classify the. according to the old sub forums system. For instance, if rants and complements were merged into the general forum, then when creating a thread in general you would select to tag it as either rants, complements, or general. Then forum reader could filter threads based on tags. For instance they could filter out rants if they only wanted to see general and complements.

Similar idea would be to add a universal forums where you could see the threads from all the different sub forums in one place and filter which ones you wanted to see.

Moved over to a better suited section.

It wasn't too long ago the Forums had a make over and they shrunk a bit. Quite a few sections were merged like the Market place sections.

I think Mod Meadows said he would monitor it for any future updates or tweeks.

For me personally I think it's good now. It's just about the right number of sections for the community that use them.

Gotta agree with you OP, although what I'd do is keep the subjects relatively the same, and instead merge RS3 and OSRS forums together. That would not only cut down the amount of subforums nicely, but also solve the problem of people posting threads for the wrong game's subforum.

But as examples of merging subforums for the subject alone:

Existing game content + game content suggestions
-> Suggestions & feedback

Treasure hunter + Solomon's store
-> Microtransactions

News discussion + recent game updates
-> News discussion (it might actually no longer be dead afterwards)

I donít know if putting the rs3 and osrs forums together would work well. They are two separate games with lots of similarities and I feel like it would increase not decrease confusion to combine them. For instance, say someone was on a combined trade forum and was trying to sell bulk rune dart sets. If he didnít clarify in the title/OP that he was from rs3 he may get some people for osrs trying to purchase. Or someone makes a thread ranting about a ton of bots somewhere when in the other game this isnít a problem in that area. Seems like a lot of confusion potential.

Iím glad youíre happy with the current setup. But it seems to me that for instance a sub forum dedicated to ďWebsite and ForumsĒ is way to narrow to get regular traffic. Anyone posting a new thread in such a sub forum would not expect to get much activity on their thread. Seems like it would work just find if this sub forum was closed and its topics covered by the general forum.

Like you said in the opening, make use of tags: when creating a new thread, tag it with either RS3, OSRS or both if applicable. :P

I think they could get away with treasure hunter and solomon combined.

I agree that news could be merged with recent updates. People just seem to randomly bump news posts from months or a year ago anyways. Summer special from last year is on page 1 which just leads to confusion.

Assuming they let those topics fade away in recent updates it would make the section look cleaner and up to date. Like do you really need news from april of 2018 on page 1? I don't believe so.

The news posts themselves have an invisible sticky. You can post on a thread and it won't automatically go to the top of page one like on other sub-forums.

I do completely agree that these old posts should be locked. Not only do they cause confusion with updates (particularly yearly occurrences such as Summer Promos and Premier Packages), but they also actact a degree of spam and random posting.

Yea Trewavas, Twitch Prime deal topic is dated 26-Jul-2018 and is meant for 2018 yet people are posting on it for 2019 which is only confusing to people.

I dunno why April 2018 topics have people posting in June or even November 2019. They should lock them at the end of those months.

They already have the news section at the top of the website and an archive included with that. I feel like recent updates serves them just fine for month update topics. Since the news section seems pretty dead and spammed anyways.
