Because of a major HD crash I had to reinstall Windows 7 (Professional). The client had been working perfectly on this machine/OS for many years. Now I have everything installed (drivers etc.) but there's one issue: I have no sound in RS.

I first checked Runescape audio settings and saw that nothing was muted.

When I checked the Windows 7 volume mixer, I noticed all active applications were listed in there and were giving sounds, but not the RS client. I went to this page and it said to "Click on the 'Advanced' tab and tick the box that says 'Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device", but it was already ticked.

I checked if there was an update for my sound card but there wasn't.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you didn't install the DirectX dependencies when the game installed. Although windows comes with DirectX12 these days, there are still specific things needed in the older versions for certain games. You can download the file to install the DirectX libraries that should enable sound in RS from here.

Be careful to avoid the bing bar it will try to install, but otherwise this one package will hopefully fix your problem instantly.
