You can't override familiars with follower pets because follower pets lack animations required for familiars, and making those animations isn't a quick job. Imagine overriding your combat familiar with a follower pet and going to battle: your familiar would be playing its idle animation while an attack animation should play (but which does not exist), so unless you saw a projectile fly from its idle body and/or you saw its hit splat on the target, you couldn't tell if your familiar is actually attacking or not, not to mention that it breaks the immersion of the game to have idle models shoot projectiles/deal damage.

Fair enough but however it troubles me that when the option became available, why didn't they also add animations to the follower pets?
