Hello ladies and gentlemen,

What do you think Runescape would be like if you were CEO of Jagex? I think Jagex would be bankrupt if I was CEO since I am not good at saving money. What about you guys? :)

If I was the CEO, I'd immediately focus on removing Treasure Hunter and Solomon's store, instead aiming for gameplay with integrity that'd sell membership and bonds. Short term profitability would probably drop, but it'd pay off long term! > )

I wouldn't have sold it to the Americans because that's when it all started going downhill and the creation of Squeel of Fortune soon followed and everything else, which then led to the Chinese company that's notorious for smothering games to death with heavy MTX and then after them they sold it to Chinese mining company that currently owns Jagex.

Owner and CEO, I have tendency to confuse the two. But nonetheless, while the thread is about the CEO if I owned it outright that is what I wouldn't have done all those years ago.

SGS isn't a huge problem, especially with the cut back of it nowadays. Cosmetics certainly did ruin the enjoyment of seeing items you actually recognize, though. The overall theme of the game was certainly ruined by it, too - i.e. wings, unicorns, etc ffs.

TH is definitely an issue for many reasons and I'd consider removing it too at any cost. No MTX and EoC is essentially why OSRS is thriving far beyond RS3 (I play both versions on this account), aside from the nostalgia factor.

In fact, I'd probably now push out more cosmetics-only to encourage the game is free to play for everyone, entirely. In comparison to MTX, membership subscriptions can't make up that large of a revenue, I'd imagine.

Solomon's store isn't as big of a problem as Treasure Hunter is for sure, but it's still a problem. On top of the things you mentioned:

1. It strips basic features behind a paywall which should be free once you pay for the game normally: for example, a lot of the bank space in RS3 is paywalled, whilst all of the bank space in OSRS is free once you pay for membership as it should. Paywalling something like this shouldn't be a thing even in F2P games, but certainly has zero place in a subscription game like Runescape.

2. Even the cosmetic features can easily devalue actual in-game content; why bother getting 99 summoning + other criteria for certain dragon pets, when you could just buy a drake pet from Solomon's store for example (even though drakes and dragons are technically different)? Cosmetic MTX doesn't belong to subscription-based games, it belongs to F2P games.

3. Overall, Solomon's store is pretty overpriced, and Jagex has even deceived some players with "sales" like certain shadow series. For example, shadow drake was meant to be discontinued for good according to Jagex's news post, but were brought back later with different wording, because they realized the older wording meant discontinued for good, but Jagex still refused to keep its word, despite selling that product under that premise.

You mean that you'd remove membership entirely? Or are you talking about being able to play without paying anything yourself with bonds (even though somebody else pays a bigger price than regular membership would cost for those bonds to exist)?

Membership revenue makes up the majority of Jagex's revenue though, as seen here:

(We don't have full 2018 data yet because 2018 just ended.)

But since MTX, especially loot boxes like Treasure Hunter, drive away players, the membership revenue numbers could be even higher without Treasure Hunter existing, so you gotta remember that also.

Hmm.. good point, didn't really consider items non-cosmetic to exclusively the SGS.

& Yes, I was talking subscriptions as a whole. I suppose I was wrong, that does seem like quite a large income solely from membership. Very interesting, indeed.

Seems I wouldn't make a good CEO. Darn.

I'd like to bring about the end of LP/Auras and just rework accuracy as a whole so splashing is no longer a issue

With splashing removed the game would be funny

I for one would love to see how long it'd take for a 50 squad team to kill Vorago with Level 1 weapons X.D
