I think it is way beyond luck hosting an online game that continues to evolve since 2001.

The only successful game Jagex has made was made by a few brothers at their mom's house. Every single venture after that has been a failure, with the exception of OSRS, which is just a version of that same game from 10 years earlier after they screwed it up so bad. That antiquated version of the game is now more popular than the main game.

It may not have been luck that the Gowers created a successful game for its time, but it's certainly out of luck that it's still around after all the mishandling the game has had.

It is important to distinguish between "players" and "bots".

The bulk of the bots play on OSRS.

According to the latest ban statistics, in a one week period, there were around 6k bots banned in RS3, compared to over 100k bots banned in OSRS.

Don't be fooled by falsely inflated numbers on the player counters.

Correct. Do not be fooled by the falsely inflated player counters.

The number listed at the top of RS3's website is combination of RS3 players and OSRS players online.

Not only that, but the RS3 counter also includes people in the RS3 lobby (people who could have been afk for up to an hour). So, even after you subtract the OSRS player count from the main page playercount, you'll still actually have less people inside worlds than the RS3 player count would suggest.

According to Mod Mat K, bot percentage of concurrent players is approximately 10-12%. So just subtract a generous 15% of OSRS's playerbase to correct this issue. :)

Okay, so by those calculations, with over 100k bots being banned per week, that would mean there are over 1.5 million OSRS players per week?

Concurrent players can't really be used to determine a total playerbase, but it's a good gauge for popularity.

To figure that out you'd have to factor in things like how long a bot's lifespan is. I'm sure some are banned within an hour or so. Others aren't banned and are analyzed over time, some slip through. Only Jagex knows for sure how many unique players there are.
