the playerbase is dying, the game barely has any advertisement (and the ads that do exist are bloody awful, the hell was up with that murder-clown?)

this game can get a very healthy dose of fresh blood by putting the game on steam.
not to mention the steam hub will be great for posting art, screenshots and guides.

there are plenty MMORPG's that moved to steam and are doing very well.

sp come on jagex, do it before it will be too late!

No. The playerbase is not dying at all. It is actually better than ever.

"The RuneScape franchise achieved the highest ever paid membership total in its history over the Christmas period, surpassing previous record set in 2008"

You should also see a noticeable increase of RS3 concurrent players since the release of POF and even more noticeable after the recent release of M&S Rework.

Steam is also losing a lot of steam. They have many new competitors including the fearsome Epic:

Steam take a big 30% cut of their client's profits. Epic only takes 12%... and better yet, Jagex Partners not only keep all the 100% profits from their own games to themselves, but will also get a cut from the games they publish later.

While yes, it might be good to get the publicity of being on Steam, a whole 30% cut is a massive blow to already well-established games like RuneScape.

There is no way Jagex are going to join Steam at this point. It would cut their profits, and any cuts is a no-no for such a company.

Unless it was guaranteed to bring in more players and money that they would stand to lose.. which I highly doubt.

Forgive my ignorance, as I'm not really a Steam guy, but what would be the benefits of RuneScape being available through Steam rather than distributed solely by Jagex through their channels?

A much larger audience would be the only benefit. There is no guarantee that audience will be interested in RuneScape though, as there are so many other games on the platform.

Ahhh, gotcha, so it'd be about nabbing people from Steam's built-in userbase who aren't familiar with RS already.

Interesting.

I guess Steam is quite a massive distribution platform... but yeah, with so many games moving away from the Steam model these days and doing things on their own, it doesn't seem very likely.

I don't think Jagex would appreciate giving up a large chunk of their turnover. There would really not be a financial benefit to putting it on steam.
