I know playing the game with the sound on is out of vogue these days, but I usually do because not having these feedback sometimes leaves me feeling disoriented, plus it's useful it you're afking or multitasking.

But one of my biggest bugbears is noisy familiars.. Is it just me, is there a way to turn them off without muting the sounds.

No, there isn't (as far as I'm aware) - but maybe there should be or Jagex should just work on creating familiars with more bearable audios.

Maybe sit listening to the same audio for two hours straight before actually putting it into the game for future familiars (or overhaul the existing ones at some point), if it passes that test and the listener doesn't get annoyed by it then it should be allowed in the game; if it fails it, record a better and/or different audio.

It was the odious "buddy" familiar that prompted this.
Monkies, whichever dog/wolf/hybrid quadriped it is that whines, Trevor mushroom man and Troll babies are also among the worst of them.

Considering Jagex apparently want to encourage more people to play with the sound on, this kind of crap really doesn't make sense. Even a global mute on ALL familiars, which I suspect is more possible than a selective mute, would be a godsend..

Incidentally, I tweaked around with the audio settings - familiars are counted as "ambient", so if you disable ambient sounds only, then they're gone. You do lose other things, but it's not as bad as losing everything. It's a stopgap I guess.

This is the solution, and it's how I play.

And it doesn't just save your sanity by muting the pets: if you haven't got unnecessary background noises to contend with, the more important sounds become easier to hear.

For recent examples, both Rockertunities and Seren Spirits have their own subtle noise that lets you know they spawned. They're rather quiet and subtle, and could get easily lost among other sounds. With Ambient Sounds disabled, they become far easier to notice and respond to.
