I don't want to have to go to Arty's workshop to smith, I want to be able to place forges where it's convenient to me and others! That's often on 2 at Burthorpe, a place of community interaction where other portables can be utilised as the mood takes, a handy catch-all location!
Please return them pronto!
Put the bloody porta forges back in use anywhere!!! I don't want to go to Arty's workshop to smith, the forges at Burthorpe on 2 are popular, convenient and an area of social interaction!!
Get it Jagex, got it, GOOD!!!!!

Artisan's Workshop is now the catch-all area for smithing. Check out world 70 now for all your smithing needs.

On the topic of portable forges: their bonuses could no longer be applied to the new smithing functionality, so all you would get is a forge next to a bank, something that is no longer exclusively needed due to how the metal bank functions now.

If you use the skills necklace (dirt cheap and only getting cheaper with all the geodes people are mining up) it's actually much easier to get to than the Combat Academy where most people liked putting the portable forges.

Just take your luminite injectors to World 70 Artisan's Workshop and get the same community and thankfulness of fellow smiths. Now with respect points!

The new smithing and mining is all well and good but this update ruined crafting, especially F2P crafting.

How do you even train that without portable forges(in a way that doesn't cost tons of gp)?

Even if Portable Forges returned, very few people would bother to use them since Artisans Workshop offers all the most significant benefits while removing all the worst drawbacks.

World 84 Combat Academy had a Portable Forge up most of the time, because it was the most reliable place where people wanting to do Smithing would gather. People mostly ignored all the trolling which went on because there wasn't really much alternative other than buying your own forge (the more costly solution) or hopping worlds trying to find another forge in a spot that isn't being heavily trolled - which was frustrating, since other worlds didn't maintain forges around the clock like W84 did.

Now, most people gather at Artisan's Workshop. Why deal with all the trolling on W84 if you don't have to? Thus popping a forge down for yourself would be fine, but why would you pay money to buy forges when they're not much better (or better at all) than Artisan's Workshop?

The team did say on the recent livestream that they might look into adding a new portable device to replace Portable Forges, which works better with the new mechanics, somewhere down the line. I don't think they need to do that, since nobody would use them unless they're utterly overpowered, and if people *did* end up using them it would encourage people away from Artisan's Workshop back to Combat Academy again, destroying the communal skilling we have going at the moment by giving power back to the trolls again.

the portable forge proccing effect is now global and I think scales with smithing level. You can add gold and silver to the ore bank, rumors being that it requires Family Crest to do so.

So crafting is also better than ever. Being able to make 28 jewelry per inventory instead of 14 is just swell.

It does; I can confirm my F2P HCIM can't bank silver or gold in the metal bank, nor is there a way for F2P to be able to unlock that feature.

That said, it's not an explicitly members-only feature (the requirement is that you need to complete a P2P quest, not that you have to be on a member server like regular members-only features), so theoretically all F2P players would have to do is earn one bond and complete that quest, and they should be able to put silver/gold in their metal bank even after returning to F2P.

It would be neat if people doing that were able to use their Smelting Gauntlets gotten from that quest after returning to F2P, but they can't - Smelting Gauntlets revert to being unusable members items if you're on F2P worlds.

You guys are only looking at portable forges from the "anvil/furnace right next to a bank" angle.

The thing is, portable forges are even more useful now, as they're now actually be used as "portable" smithing stations, instead of a bankstanding accessory.

People could plop down portable forges at popular mining spots and people could deposit their ores in the ore bank, smelt bars, store the bars, smith stuff, etc. It's honestly a lot more varied and interesting than what portables forges were used for before. They deserve to return.
