A Solution to the Onyx Problem

There's been a fair bit of contention over the latest hotfix, and a lot of one side telling the other side (between skillers and pvmers) to burn in hell, on both sides. I personally fall on the skiller side of the divide but can understand some basis in Jagex's action, though wholesale I do not approve. I propose a three-prong fix to the situation:

1. Adjust the drop tables on Priff gem rocks.

This is the obvious one. I would reduce Onyx from their 1/400 rate down to 1/1000, but I'd also remove sapphires from the table entirely. Replace them with varying degrees of spirit gem and/or more emeralds-dragonstones.

2. Elevate alch prices on core metal gear, at least for necronium and up but would advocate (for what it's worth) to go ahead and do this will all metals.

If regular mining retains a consistently superior gp/hr to gem rocks, people will be less incentivized to roll for that 1/1000 onyx. I would suggest doubling alch prices at a baseline. Generally speaking mining still won't slap 3m/hr at an active/optimum rate, and that's perfectly acceptable.

3. Adjust some of the stone spirit drops from PvM (and crystal keys, please!)

A lot of these were done with the old system in mind, what was a t85 drop has become a t50 drop, and oftentimes (especially when dealing with old bar drops) not even a full one. I would advise giving PvMers SOME actual ores back, increase the rate of salvage drops, the level of ore, and for the love of God make it so everything that gives addy/rune stone spirits also gives luminite ones.
Go look at old lists, only replace [most] ores with spirits/ore (of appropriate quality) and replace [most] bars with salvage. It's ok if PvM yields SOME supply. To bar them from it entirely was also heavy-handed.
Hopefully that will be enough to curtail PvM losses the update has brought about.

3b. Consider an invention item to hold all stone spirits in a single slot.

I like how people somehow think PvMers are responsible for this update, as if onyxes made up more than a tiny portion of our overall profit, and as if we didn't benefit from dirt cheap RoD charges.

But literally it was PvM'ers complaining on Reddit that got it changed so, cuz I literally thought the same thing as it's still a 1m drop to me, plus cheaper death costs.

Anyway, this wouldn't work either as reducing the drop rate to 1/1000 would make it less than half of previous profit and be just as effective as removing entirely as there's still other methods of mining that generate at least 2x the profit. Prolly the only people that'd mine it then are ironmen just to get onyx for personal use.

It's not gonna be changed back so just move on and mine banite/animica for pretty much the same/slightly better profits.

1. The problem was that skillers were using multiple alts at the gem rocks, which is why 10000% more onyxes from Mining was entering the game than before. This fix has made the majority of skillers consider other forms of "no effort" moneymaking as active skillers wouldn't have wasted their time with this method.

2. This is bad, as it'll lead to even more inflation! Inflation is another reason why Jagex removed uncut onyxes from the Prif Gem rocks, as players were mass alching them leading to 1.08m raw GP entering the game per alch. Remember that 10000% more onyxes from Mining were entering the game than before.

3. This one I agree on. Stone spirits need a drastic change. Stone spirits themselves was a terrible idea to try and make mining profitable, when it just led to an huge increase in ore supply by 2x to (however many alts players use)x for "no effort" moneymaking. I strongly believe that the 100% double ores is what's the problem. It should be changed to some other perk that even high leveled players with a ton of money who want 120 mining/200m mining would use them for, not this double ore garbage!

Apparently Jagex has some design to deal with stone spirits (according to Mod Shauny during the latest live stream), but I don't hold any optimism considering the reasons they gave as to why stone spirits are currently useless/low valued was essentially garbage.
