Overall, the mining and smithing update is awesome and im loving most everything that came with it. However, I don't understand why gold/silver smithing is separated from the forge and the furnace. I feel that there is no reason why they shouldn't be combined to be capable of doing both between them.

I ran into this problem because I was using horviks shop in varrock to buy a steel platebody for a clue on my ironman and was also going to make some games necklaces while i was there since there was a forge as well, only to find i had to go out of my way to another location to find a furnace.

TL;DR:
The separation of gold from the forge causes an unnecessary inconvenience to the player because you should be able to use either to make gold/silver items.

I don't understand your point at all.

Are you confusing Forges (small, located by every anvil) with Furnaces (large)? Varrock never had a Furnace in it before - the closest was located at Edgeville. It has Forges because the only purpose of those is to heat (and re-heat) items during the process of smithing.

You cannot use the small Forges (or as I call them, heaters) to smelt ore or craft jewellery. You need to use a Furnace for that, and as I said Varrock never had one of those before so why should it suddenly have one now?

No I am not confusing them at all, I am stating that they should both be able to complete all tasks associated with creating items (including jewellry through goldsmithing.)

There is no reason a forge shouldn't be able to make gold items.

Edit: Misclicked edit instead of quote to reply to the above post.

I guess it is technical thing: Making jewellery is a smelting related task - and those small forges are related to smithing, not smelting. Otherwise you also could directly ask for making the bars in there. A logical explanation would be the forge can't generate enough heat to actually smelt stuff, just make it a bit hotter so it can be formed.

The only exception was the portable forge since it contained both a furnace and an anvil so it was suitable for both.

I guess this makes sense but its still just an unnecessary excuse for it not being possible that still causes inconvenience to the player.

It doesn't cause any inconvenience. Those didn't exist before; they only exist now because of the way anvils work. Unless you previously somehow crafted jewellery on anvils previously, I can't see what the problem is.

The only difference is now you have to teleport to the Falador lodestone instead of the Lumbridge one to do your crafting/smithing - hardly a big deal. You can even do your crafting in Al Kharid like people used to do for years until portables got added.

There is in fact a furnace proper in Lumbridge, and has been for years.
