Steadfast boots are lvl 85 and now have the exact same stats as Elder rune armoured boots +5, but those are lvl 90 gear - whats the logic behind this. Not only has it made steadfast boots crash like crazy but whats the point in having two equal boots with different equip levels?

Steadfast boots basically still have two advantages: They do not degrade and you can equip them at level 85 already, not 90.

Elder rune stuff is tier nerfed so it doesn't devalue other stuff at level 90. Naturally it just happens it devalues stuff at lower levels. Btw - there are tetsu boots as well at 85.

Steadfast boots don't degrade like elder rune boots +5 do.

Why then are they crashing?

Easy, masterwork boots. Masterwork boots have the same stats as emberkeen boots (the previous BiS power armor boots for melee), are easier and cheaper to maintain, and can be upgraded to be even stronger.

Why do we care about emberkeen boots?

Because you need steadfast boots to make them, and a reduced demand for emberkeen boots will decrease the price of their components.

I admit I forgot about the degrading aspect of it, but the way they matched up the lvl requirements and stats for smithable items compared to pre-existing dropped items like this still feels really off to me.

It's either they're completely useless, nobody ever uses them, and negates the entire idea of giving value to smithable gear beyond alch fodder.

Or they're moderately useful, negate some slightly less useful gear, and hold a value.

Steadfast boots were prior to update, and still are, only of value because of Emberkeen boots.

As a t85 tank boot Steadfasts have held little instrinsic value since Tetsu boots and Achto Teralith boots were both introduced.

Emberkeen is no longer best in slot as a power melee boot.

If anything has been overlooked I'd argue its the Emberkeen boots, or rather the parts required to make them.
The new Masterwork and Trimmed Masterwork will seriously harm the profitability of Rune Dragons because of this.
I can only hope Jagex will make the parts needed again when they introduce the next tier of power armor.

Elder rune boots and Steadfast boots are different beasts essentially.

Not only are Steadfast non-degradable, it can't be upgraded to T92 boots.

The non-degradable nature of Steadfast Boots will keep them in some demand of some players who don't want to spend much. However, being not upgradeable will hurt its value more, so its demand goes down and so is its price.

Elder Rune can't be upgraded to t92 either, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Dilbert, Steadfast boots are upgradeable to emberkeen boots, which are t90 power armor boots. These are degradeable. Since emberkeen is less desirable, the price in steadfast drops. You can read the rest of the thread to find out more about this.

IMO the solution would be to give emberkeen boots a special effect or add a lifepoint bonus to them. Give emberkeen a niche.
