As long as they use the same login details, it's pretty much not gonna happen. Sorry.

Would be surprised if they did do it though.

So would I.

Ok, that's quite the conga line we have here.

@OP
"Unlinking" your OSRS and RS3 characters as you put isn't going to happen. I have never heard of other companies offering such an option and they tend to have a far more diverse stable of games than Jagex. As Orcrist9 put it, there are technical issues associated with doing something like this and it will cost you more money in the long run.

If you really want to multi-box (that is playing multiple characters on the same computer) OSRS and RS3 simultaneously you should have created a separate account. The closest thing Jagex has done to this effect is migrate character info from Runescape Classic to Runescape 2 back in the early 2000s. They have not done anything like it since.
Jagex is at it again! See my thread, "
The Great Jagex Games Purge
", to discuss what Jagex's next steps are. Also please drop by my
Chronicle Dev Petition
thread to see what I have to say about Chronicle.

Don't see this happening as this would decrease profit.

How would someone paying for two memberships instead of one as they do now decrease profits? If anything it would increase profits because they would have to pay for two memberships instead of one.

To unlink accounts, Jagex would have to make a copy pasta of one of the accounts.
It could be done, but might require engine work on OSRS.

It would be simpler to simply create a new account for OSRS and play that one.
Hi.

The engine work would need to be server-side, on the login-server rather than any game-specific one, and requested via web browser. As has been said, the process would simply clone the existing save-file, and then delete the parts that are completely irrelevant to each.

That would leave you with two save files, each with all the applicable data needed to play that specific version of the game. From there the only problem might be that duplicate sets of login details might mess things up, so the player would have to specify new logon details at the time when the accounts are split, which would essentially turn either your RS3 or OSRS account into an alt.

So it is possible. But it's clunky, awkward, fairly pointless, and definitely a one-way decision which couldn't ever be reverted in the future: if accounts with different credentials could ever be merged, that would lead to people splitting and merging accounts all over the place, and even merging accounts owned by multiple players.

Since membership is cross-game, imagine if you bought a membership and then split your account into two: which account would keep the membership and which would lose it? And if two accounts were merged and one wasn't a member, would that inherit the membership of the first while it's merged?

Those thorny issues mean that even if accounts were split, they could never ever be rejoined again, so you'd permanently lose the benefit of being able to access member content in OSRS just from having membership on your RS3 main, so people would regret doing this.

I'd like to be able to play on RS3 and OSRS at the same time. Maybe just take our name and add "OSRS" on the end or something idk. Maybe even a "ghost" function, where your online status and all messages get sent to the version of the game that you aren't afking on.

As long as I can play both.

They'd certainly have to increase, double at least, the size of the friend-list and ignore-list if suddenly everyone has two characters with the same name they log-into and they're tagged as "RS3" and "OSRS." Not to mention FCs and CCs.

However, I also don't see that being handled very smoothly either. If you had a friend send you a message to your character in RS3, would you receive the same message in OSRS? If the individual characters were treated as separate accounts, the management of that would be nothing less than a mess, and that's just for the friend-list -- it'd be even worse in an FC and CC.

It's really not worth the effort when you can already create an individual account for both games and effectively do the same thing.
Here, I'll give you this strawberry if you keep it a secret!

I don't support this idea, its a lot of work for no purpose.

I like having membership count for both games, and if anyone wants separate accounts for OSRS and RS3, then make an alt.
Hi.
