Oh, on the topic of Endgame/Armadyl though, if we do non-canon runs do we get to keep the items that we can get through certain encounters? IE Armadyls feather in this case. I need a new writing quill.

Any physical objects obtained in non-canon playthroughs can be kept, yes.

One suggestion I've seen crop up repeatably is the notion of WASD style flight.

We'll be investigating something like this, but I'll be honest I don't have much hope. Developing a smooth flight system on a grid based game is going to feel a little clunky and I'm not convinced we can create a version that will be workable. I also don't want to spend too much time on this if it doesn't seem workable, as it'll be time taken from everything else.

Just setting expectations now. ;)

My personal opinion:
I think the Aviansie Smithing should have the similar mechanics as the Ceremonial Sword.
If it is to be used.

So, I'm less keen to use Aviansie Smithing as a core mechanic for the very simple reason that we're working on a massive Mining and Smithing rework at the moment, and I don't want to create anything that adds to their workload.

So I'm inclined to put any form of aviansie smithing on the backburner for now and encourage you to consider other things. ;)

Actually, you can do smithing without really smithing.

The mechanics use on the xp stations during seasonal events or that jmod event xp stone.

You can go thru the physical motions of hammering something in an afk manner, but you wouldn't necessarily be smelting or producing any items.

Or could take a page from the battering ram construction in Nomad's Elegy (or requiem?) where there is a graphical change to indicate progress and the player gets xp every couple of game ticks ... But again, you are not using the traditional smithing mechanics to award xp.

Trade off might be they don't feel quite as immersive as the upcoming smithing mechanics might be.

Also, would RoP canonically take place before or after Sliske's Endgame?
Or would the story be designed to run parallel/on its own so if something were to happen to Armadyl, the story could stand on its own (ie the focus more on the avianese and armadyls past and personality)

Personally I'd like to make it post-endgame. There are some themes and moments from Endgame I'd like an excuse to explore further.

That said Endgame has really high stats and makes a big barrier for entry which makes it a difficult question.

I could make the additional stuff optional, but that makes it trickier for lore hounds as they'll have to pick the order they do things in.

Basic answer, I don't know yet, it's still something I'm having an internal conflict over. :D

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the overly complex timeline with requirements not always making so much sense. If it was to come before Sliske's Endgame, would it be possible to add Rite of Passage as a requirement to Endgame?

Either way though, I wouldn't be too bothered, I understand the reasoning behind something like this. I'd just be excited to see the quest!

Idk if you choose animators and stuff, but I would like to see the differences between the tribes(?) of Aviansie. Like, Owl-people vs. Hawks vs. Herons, as well as hear about their different cultural values based on which sect(?) they belong to, as well as diets, and hunting styles, etc.

~~~~
As for before/after SE, would it be that bad/difficult to have it before, and add it as a req, oreven just have it be recommended like some other quests do. Like, if it was set before, I don't really think anything in SE would need to be changed. I just looked it over, and from what I read, Armadyl's dialogue is pretty well regulated either way.
(Imo Sliske's Endgame came a little too soon, and we should have had a *significant* quest for each faction before "closing off" that plot point, so that we could get all the major plot points tossed in first, like the Godless, as an example, or whatever's going to happen with Tumeken and Amascut.)
So, this is true if we're just having smithing references in game, but not true if we're creating it as some sort of quest reward, which is what I assumed the previous comment was referring to.
Basically anything smithing related needs to be balanced, which creates more work for the rework. If development for this quest comes after the mining and smithing rework, then it's something I'll consider, if it is coming before the rework is complete, then I'm going to put my foot down and take it off the table for the sanity of those guys (they've got a BIG job ahead of them).
Note: Not having it immediately following the quest does not mean it'll never come. It'll be a potential future reward space we might consider.
On the plus side, I was just chatting with Mod Orion and he has promised me that he thinks he can create a system for my floating islands that will look cool and development (not graphics) will only take about a day or so. So that's one big job done if he can do it. :D
Awesome, hope it goes well.
Regarding the earlier WASD free falling / flight movement, hopefully you guys can get it working..if you can’t though, it’s fine. Don’t think anyone would appreciate another cheese / beach ball rolling.:)
On WASD movement, would people want casual movement vs ... timed event?
I'm not sure how to describe it.
For example, in Chidren of Mah, the player needs to navigate/surf the lava flows using the left/right arrows.
Personally, I didn't enjoy that. But I know some players who did.
Casual movement would be little different than what you already do running around the map.
The WASD movement for the area would simply allow player to navigate between islands or something like that, where the only "danger" you run into is things like wind gusts that impede movement.
None of the things that would complete reset progress or be a true life/death scenario.
On the same note, I'm not sure how much players would enjoy spending 10 minutes of game time just trying to get from 1 island of Abbinah to another.
(be closer to the open world of World of Warcraft or Open Skies vs the game of scale experience in Runescape)
I think the quest definitely needs to follow on from Sliske's Endgame. That quest did a good job of more properly introducing Armadyl etc and an important Aviansie narrative and it'd be strange to at least not reference those developments in this kind of quest.
What lore do I want to see:
Abbinah has always been talked about as this very harsh world, with the Aviansie there living in a hell they at the same time can call home. I think what I really want to see atm is that atmosphere fleshed out and done right, it is after all the people whose only major celebration is new years because it means they survived another year. I think it's a chance to show a very fresh and unique take on this, and the history of the people living there. So far we've seen it described in terms of the weather and islands themselves, but I bet we could see similar problems with some of the inhabitants of the world being quite harsh too.
