thanks for all the feedback. this has been very educational to me. from what I gathered here:

- repeat offenders are banned very rarely
- repeat offenders can return immediately on alt accounts
- most of the moderation team agrees with these policies

sounds awful

How do you go about it, if you are in the fmod position?

Assuming there isn't one already, have a system where fmods can make notes and share them when viewing players' forum profiles. Include in that the user's latest IP address. If someone with matching IP address behaves in the same way that earned them a ban on another account, then permaban the alt account for ban evasion.

Smaller companies with a lot less money have zero issue handling this and just automatically ban people that try to ban-evade.
Don't forget – RuneScape members get TWO free spins a day instead of the usual one!

Exposing IP addresses of forumers, even to a trusted volunteer group like the fmods will open a lot of legal can of worms for Jagex. If there is no legal barrier for such implementation, such tool could have been delegated to us decades ago.

IP addresses of people that logged into your account were visible at the top of the screen for years. And you of all people should know that an IP address isn't as sensitive info as some think it is. Though with runescape, the concerns are valid since people do DDOS for profit. In which case Immortalized probably has the right idea.

Mods don't necessarily need direct visibility of the IPs, just the ability to view people that have matched IPs in the past.
