Hi. :)

I believe if some of these suggestions I've listed below are considered, we can help grow the forum community and encourage use among the 'general population'. :P I've also added a section with ideas from other players into the bottom posts.

Here are a few points and suggestions:

Hot Topics on the Homepage?

Hot Topics are popular threads which are showcased to the rest of the community. By having Hot Topics on the homepage, the forums are being promoted to non-forum users each time they visit the main page to login. This will also act as a small reward for a forum user who has managed to have their thread showcased on the main page, encouraging top quality threads being written by the forum community - which in turn helps generate forum activity as well!

Links to permitted External Sites?

Use of links could potentially be an amazing addition to the forums, by adding links players could use trusted sites to share videos from YouTube, social media (like Tweets, Reddit posts etc) helping to bridge the divide between the forums and social media. Helpful guides can be shared or links to the unofficial Wiki.

Jagex could create a list of all trusted/permitted sites in Community Home and place them in a sticky.

FMods would moderate all external links which are breaching the Code of Conduct. Any links posted that aren't on the permitted list would result in the post containing the link being hidden, no exceptions. This would be crucial in order to prevent any form of phishing, adult-content or other such links being posted on the forums while at the same time ensuring that FMods won't be required to risk compromising their own security to investigate a link when moderating.

The High-Level Forums currently permit the use of external links.

JMods Activity and Social Media?

If JMods used the forums more often they will draw more players here. Players follow the JMods. By using social media as an official way to ask for support or to quickly send a JMod a suggestion, it's potentially taking users away from these forums. Use of the forums could be encouraged a lot more by Jagex as a whole.

There are a few JMods who post frequently but not enough to cover the forums on a regular basis, certain community and sections receive no support at all, which deters players from choosing to post there. Player suggestions & feedback don't appear to be acknowledged if staff aren't posting. There's nothing more off-putting than spending hours creating a suggestion, only for it to go unheard due to a lack of staff presence.

A few years ago there used to be a sticky in the General forum which showed the top JMod contributors of the month. This was a great little community initiative and it would be nice to see this again, even if it's not in the General section.

Having said all of this, I'm aware that it's much more convenient for JMods to use social media. My only wish is for the forums to be promoted a lot more often by Jagex, when possible.

Shift the Community Led Support forums to the top of the index?

Moving the Community Led Support forums closer to the top of the forum index would take those players using the forums and seeking help to the correct place they're looking for right away. They wouldn't have to search through a list of potential subforums to reach the Community Support Forums and receive the help they need. The change would likely increase traffic within those help forums and reduce misplaced support/help threads elsewhere.

This will encourage players to use the forums for assistance, having received help so easily when they first came to the forums.

Teaching players in-game about the Forums

Some players have never heard of the forums or have no idea how to use them. By having tutorials in-game, this will encourage unfamiliar players to check the forums out. This could be in the form of an NPC sharing advice & useful links or a small forum related achievement diary type task which gives the user a cosmetic in-game reward or something else along those lines.

Promoting use of the Forums In-game?

This is already happening to a small extent, considering the VIP forums, HLF forums and the Arrav/Heroes quests. By adding more reasons or incentives for users to visit the forums, players may discover that they like it here and then decide to stay.

Great ways to promote the forums in-game could include adding a button under the minimap linking to the forums or an NPC to the Grand Exchange which links straight to the forums. Examples of dialogue options for a Forum NPC could be:

Want to give us feedback on a recent game update?

Need tech support with an issue, that you just can't seem to fix?

Looking for a clan, recruiting for your clan or looking to create a clan?

The promotion and increased use of the forums is something we have requested for a long time, and it is something Jagex wishes to do (especially Mod Kalaya, together with several other J-Mods, is committed to this). However, it will simply always remain easier to quickly interact with players through sites like Twitter. This does not mean the focus should be removed completely from the forums though - nor that the forums should or will be abandoned. It merely means that Jagex must re-think the structure and purpose of the forums in order to maintain a consistent activity level whilst attracting new posters. I'd very much support an increased in-game promotion of the forums - but at the same time we cannot ignore the fact that the RuneScape forums are surprisingly active compared to other gaming-forums (very much so, in fact).

One thing that would do heaps would be the suggested images and external websites. I'd like to see if this could be achieved in a sensible way somehow - it would undeniably boost the forum activity significantly. The Hot-topics suggestion would moreover attract, I'd like to think so anyway, a few extra clicks.

As for the Jagex Lite idea... whilst I very much see the appeal of such a forum I'd honestly argue that an increased overall J-Mod activity throughout all forums would be better and reach a wider audience. I'd moreover fear that a large amount of posts would be account related and not really be the AMA-like structure you presumably would like.

My two cents - nice thread!

All excellent ideas! I am fully supportive of any initiative to bring more players to the forums!

I have long been of the belief that more JMod interaction would result in more player satisfaction and an increase in forum activity. I have noticed that most of he Community Management JMods have done a good job of being active on the forums, but they can't be alone! I would love to see some of the developer mods replying to some of the suggestion/feedback threads on whether or not they would work. Even a post as simple as "We would love to add your idea, but it is just to big of an update for us to handle at this time" would be great. I would let players know that their ideas are being heard, and boost overall player satisfaction!

I also really like the idea of in-game forum tools. I have mentioned the idea of a "Forum search" tool before to be added into the game. This would allow players to search for help on the forums or see if anyone is discussion a certain topic. I think there is a lot of opportunity for in-game forum tools, and it could really be great for the player community as a whole.

Thanks for creating this thread Kiara. Having one main thread to share ideas on how to boost forum activity is a great idea!

Thanks Mexk and Hyles.

I completely agree with both of you, I've also noticed an increase in activity recently from the JMods, Mexk.

Nice suggestion Hyles, an in-game tool which allows someone to search the forums sounds like it could be very handy indeed. That alongside extra attention from JMods who are in one of the various game content departments, would certainly be welcomed. :)

I agree with Mexk here. I think it would be better to have JMod activity all over the forums rather than just focussed in one forum. Plus, I think a section such as the Jagex Lite one described would have many players posting personal account info in hopes of getting support, which could lead to other problems. (This issue has been seen in the Account Help forums as well.)
