Long ago in rs 3 there was an item for rangers known as a sling as seen here

https://runescape.fandom.com/wiki/Sling

Tragically it was lost in an update and replaced by the boring charge bow

However i would like to propose that slings return to osrs, here’s the general idea

General

Slings are an unique type of ranged weapon, they can be used with or without ammo, they could be either two handed or one handed however the have a few differences compared to other weapons

Slings with ammo have an attack range of 6 at regular and an attack range of 7 at long range and an attack speed of 3.2 seconds at regular and 3.0 seconds at rapid

Slings without proper ammo have a range of 5 and at long range a range of 6, they have an regular attack speed of 4.0 seconds and 3.6 seconds at rapid

The reason for the slower attack speed without proper ammo is that ingame the idea is your character is looking for a rock on the ground to throw at the foe and in the haste your attack speed goes down and you fire poorly due to your haste

Slings unlike bows or crossbows do not require ammo to use but to use them best you should get the ammo

Unlike cbows or bows you can use any type of bullet with any sling type, so for example with a wool sling you could use rune bullets, this is due to the very different firing mechanism then bows/cbows, you must still meet the required ranged level so no level 1 players using rune bullets with wool slings at the start.

Slings have much lower weight then cbows or bows

Ammo

Slings would different types of ammo

The first one is known as bullets, they can’t be poisoned, players can make and use bullets in a few ways,

You may smith metal bullets from metal bars with smithing, you can make 10 bullets a bar, these would have the best damage potential , the ranged strength of bullets would be somewhat less then arrows of the same level but not too bad, for example bronze bullets have a strength of 5+ while b arrows have 7+, additionally silver bullets can be made for fighting undead and vampires, maybe even gold bullets could be made for a joke for players wanting to fire their money at foes and also blurite bullets
The second type are spike bullets, these are instead of being orbs are a bipyramid shaper, they can be smithed by players but you only get 5 a bar, these can be poisoned for use, however they have less damage potential then regular bullets

additionally like in irl you can make bullets from clay, these are made from soft clay that is hardened in a kiln, you can get 10 bullets as well per clay, these would be weaker then bronze bullets but maybe easier and cheaper to make, one idea is you could make enchanted clay bullets like crossbow bolts or the clay tablets, alternatively you could make rune essence bullets that have magical effects on them

Also you can just collect regular rocks to use, for simplicity an idea i had was this, you may check each furnace in the game once a day and get leftover rock from smelting, you can get per smelter between 50-300 rocks, these would have the worst strength of all at a whooping 1+, these are just meant as you can fire at a regular speed, they are always lost upon firing them, you could also add when mining that stray rocks collect on the ground from mining spots and players can collect these rocks for sling use if they wish, these rocks stack, the idea is similar to how fires leave ashes for players to use if they wish

members could craft granite , sandstone and limestone rocks for sling use by using a chisel on the stones, these would have better stats then regular rocks and maybe unique effects

A semi joke idea i had is you can make bullets from bread dough, you make them into bullets then burn them to be as hard as a rock, alternatively you could take burnt food that is solid i.e. not a bowl food, use a chisel or hammer on the burnt food and it creates burnt food chunks, for each burnt food type you randomly get 2-5 pieces, maybe this could give small craft xp as well, these chunks have a 1+ ranged strength bonus as well, idea being that they are as hard as a rock, this provides a new use for burnt food which is usually dropped and is useless

The food idea is based off a line of bar rescue where jon taffer says this food is as hard as a rock ,i could use this for self defense

One last idea i had for a semijoke was this, acorns can be used as ammo, they only give a 1+ on ranged strength and are always lost when firing

So when having the ammo that was listed above for slings you may fire at the regular speed and range, even for rocks or burnt food chunks

Crafting slings

Players may make slings with the crafting skill as irl they were indeed crafted not fletched

For f2p, they may make and use the following sling types

Wool sling- weakest but made from 2 balls of wools

Training sling- same as wool sling but can be received from ranged tutor, she gives 100 rocks as well or maybe she gives training bullets

Leather sling- made from 1 ball of wool and soft leather

Hard leather- made from 1 ball of wool and hard leather

Green D hide- can’t be made by f2p but can be bought at store or from GE

For p2p they may make and use slings from sinew , magic string, yak hair, golden wool or flax and the appropriate dragonhide or frog leather or snakeskin

Point of Slings

The damage potential of slings would be somewhat lower then bows and crossbows but the advantage is they can be used without ammo if the player wishes for an alternative and very cheap way to train range and kill monsters, so using a sling against the black dragon king may not be the best choice unless you are well equipped or are feeling lucky but for causal ranging they are excellent and cheap

Additionally in pvp melee players can easily just fight unarmed if they wish or just need one weapon that never runs out of uses if they use, ranged players require a weapon and ammo to fight, the sling would be the ranged version of just taking one weapon and being able to use it and never worrying about ammo

Another thought is that slings in rs could be used for the hunter skill like they were irl

one last idea is slings do extra damage against giant foes, i.e fire giants, hill giants, moss giants etc

So as you can see these are meant to be an cheap and different choice to using bows and cbows, this also adds new weapon choices for f2p to use and a new use for burnt food items

you may now post

I don't really see the point. Low level ranged weapons and ammunition are dirt cheap anyway.

well as i mentioned, it's a great choice for new players and players on a dime, also gives f2p more options and expands crafting, gives burnt food a new use.

Low level players aren't lacking in weapon choices, there's no reason to add this.

part of the idea of slings is low level players can use slings to train range on ducks or enemies in water without losing valuable ammo, also provides a nice safe and cheap way to safespot train ranged for new players

please stop suggesting things that came from RS3. Jagex wants to make their own new content, as stated numerous times.

Furthermore, this has no place in OSRS. We have plenty of diversity in ranged right now. There's no need for more.

If players are losing 'valuable' ammo then that encourages them to go out and skill, or farm resoucres through combat to sell and make more gold.

Ranged is already 100% safe to train at low levels....and there's literally no reason why it should be made any cheaper.

Plus like 4EV said....OSRS was meant to be it's own game, if people want content from all the RS3 content then they should play RS3
