In regards to the changes to the Kraken boss instance and items "dropping" in said instance, does this refer to dying in the the instance? Or does this simply affect dropping items such as sharks, making juggling easier?

It just refers to you putting items manually on the ground.
It has no effect whatsoever on death - you can't re-enter the instance after dying anyway.
