Quite impossible as RS works on a tile-based point-and-click movement system and Jagex prides themselves on weekly updates.

Consoles don't get any of this in any efficient manner.

This isn't the reason: there's no technical reason why tile-based point & click movement systems are incapable of running on console, especially since both consoles have compatibility with keyboard and mouse controls (though Wasteland 2 is the only game I know which has taken advantage of that).

Efficient updates isn't a major problem either, since most of RuneScape's updates are server-side and thus not affected by patch release schedules on consoles. What could be held-up are client bugfixes and things like that, because those would need to be approved by Sony/Microsoft, which takes time.

Jagex have said in the past that making console versions would be fairly straightforward, especially compared to mobile. However the problem is Sony and Microsoft.

Those two companies like keeping their players within their own walled-garden ecosystem, and while cross-play sometimes can happen, usually they expressly forbid it. This means PS4 and XBox One would need their own separate servers away from each other and the PC version, and Jagex refuse to do this.

The other problem is royalties.

PC is an open platform owned by nobody, and Jagex offer RuneScape for download by themselves, and the game itself uses their servers. This means Jagex can keep their prices low, because any money they make goes directly to them.

On console, Sony and Microsoft charge developers for hosting games on their stores. This would be ongoing cost to Jagex, especially since they'd also need to pay Sony and Microsoft every time they want to put out a patch.

Additionally, any money Jagex might make from micro-transactions would be taxed by Sony and Microsoft, who'd receive a portion of all the money made. This means Jagex would lose even more money there too, unless micro-transaction prices were raised to account for this.

And at a time when some people are still angry at the $11 membership fee increase, it's difficult to imagine anyone would pay $15-$20 a month to play basically the same game on a console, especially since (because of the walled-gardens) console players couldn't simply buy the bonds that PC players put on the GE.

I don't see any benefit having RS on console.

You still have to sit down and play, might aswell play on the PC.

The "benefit" is that people without a PC but own a console would be able to play. Not everyone can simply just go out and buy a PC on a whim, but may have obtained a console at some point in the last few years.

There's no doubt that potential does exist with consoles - Jagex saw that potential, and have repeatedly tried to make the console manufacturers to see sense and allow cross-play on their networks, but Sony and Microsoft refuse to do that, and Jagex refuse to split the community up further than necessary by introducing "limited lifespan" isolated community servers which wouldn't get high population levels, and which would get potentially shut down once the console generation ends.

But even if Jagex were able to make crossplay-enabled versions for console, there's still the matter of the charges Sony and Microsoft would impose: that would mean higher prices for membership and micro-transactions, unless Jagex absorbed the levy by accepting reduced takings from a new group of players who wouldn't otherwise be playing at all.

However, RS Mobile kind of makes the whole idea moot, since mobile devices are in the hands of more potential new players than consoles, and Jagex foesn't have to deal with Sony and Microsoft's shenanigans with mobile.

A suggestion like this was already plenty times made and all those times we got a answer that it was un possible to make.

1. This because of way how Runescape is made.
2. Console update certifications.

and lets be honest we all also know Jagex will lose a lot of money on the TH keys/Bonds etc etc.

The problem according to Gerhard?

Microsoft and Sony. "They said 'we cannot let the Microsoft community play with the Sony community,''' he explained, before offering his response and an explanation as to why RuneScape has yet to appear on a console. "We're not going to frame our community into boxes just for a few million more customers. Of course I'd love a few million more customers, but I just wouldn't do it [...] you almost become the disease you're trying to solve."

Developer Jagex is positioned to ship Runescape across all consoles, free-to-play and with complete cross-platform capabilities, if CEO Mark Gerhard has anything to say about it. Which, as CEO, he does. Gerhard told Develop that some console owners wanted to charge for Runescape, which he sees as absolute lunacy. "People get this for free. You're shooting yourself in the foot," Gerhard said. "But Sony was ahead of the game; they said they get it. They understand free. But all three said, 'okay, but we won't let our console play online with any other.'"

I wish I was surprised to see this thread I was think the same thing few days ago will ever come to Console. If it really wasn't that hard to bring g to console might as well more customers mean more money
