If you would get a free ticket each day up to a maximum of 10 and a general collection cap of 15 (like fish flingers), players could decide when and how much they want to do sinkholes. If they let their tickets cap out they're probably not *that* interested in it anyway and thus not even the audience of that project.

No, with this you're still forced to play X hours every so often, or else you'd miss out on the rewards. You might not personally care, but Jagex knows very well that there are lots of people who do care about getting as many temporarily available rewards as possible, or else they'd feel bad about missing out on them. And even if you don't care about it now, if enough many people also shared that sentiment, Jagex would just make the rewards even more lucrative so that you, too, would start to care about it.

If you genuinely want players to be able to decide when and how much they want to play something, then you gotta remove the pressure from them to have to log in and play X hours every X day(s) to not miss out.

Well sorry - who hasn't got the few minutes available to claim their accumulating tickets once every few days is not interested in playing the activity on a wide scale - a player who isn't interested into playing said activity on a wide scale will have their tickets awarded from ingame content capped out on all times anyway - so dailyscape isn't a matter for them. They'll use a couple of tickets every now and them and get them replenished afterwards. Especially when the majority of tickets is NOT awarded by the dailyscape mechanic, just enough to ensure there always are players available - since then players would roughly behave as they do now.

Or are you talking about those who would try to burn down a single ticket as soon as they lay hands on it no matter how inefficient is would be - guess what: since they're going to the sinkholes anyway the second they got a ticket dailyscape wouldn't really affect them either.

Of course you do not think of the issues your idea might have being hellbent getting dailyscape abolished at any price. Admitted - it is a good idea overall, but it's certainly not fully thought even regarding a fairly obvious consequence. That mechanic would perfectly work for solo based activities, but there is an issue for team based ones:

Okay let's assume sinkholes are just a minigame with access solely granted every once in a while while doing something else. Have you actually tried playing most team based minigames (not d&ds now) on their theme world while not on spotlight? They're unplayable unless you're lucky enough to have a fc at hand.

The big advantage sinkholes (and other group based d&ds) currently have is that you could casually play them at all times without hassling creating a pre-made group, which still would be possible with a free ticket mechanic, but certainly could (doesn't need to, but judging my experience regarding minigames overall I'd say it's better to be careful) become an issue if it wasn't - since players would arrive at different, random times checking if somebody is there, which could especially cause issues when you have to wait for 5 players.

Another potential scenario would be that sinkhole tickets in daemonheim wouldn't revive it as hoped - so only few players would earn their tickets that way, with them generally not having a sufficiently big players base available to play them. The free ticket once more could ensure that you always got players there.

Don't just evaluate status quo, think of potential further additions, that could change the way the skill as a whole or at least specific aspects (see token farming in ED1 or generally the casually earned dungeoneering experience and tokens in elite dungeons generally) are played.

For sinkholes a fix would be reducing the group size to 1-5, with objectives scaled down for a smaller group as well. Of course those issues also could be fixed if RS had a proper matchmaking system - but since we haven't...

Just posted another idea on Reddit: Wild Jade Vine Rework

Wild Jade vine is another one of those activities on a bizarre schedule (~ 19 hrs of growth time for 1500 Farming XP, some Slayer XP, and token Woodcutting XP)

Suggestion to rework now gives players 2 options: Combat/Slayer and Skiller.

Either option, it now becomes a monthly D&D, resettable with Monthly token and there will now be a Combat/Skiller toggle for the activity (similar to Troll Invasion). Horacio will no longer fight the Vine for you.

Combat/Slayer

Changes:

At first of month, after monthly reset, player gains ability to fight Wild Jade Vine

Wild Jade Vine is buffed in Health and Damage Output (fight is longer, somewhat comparable to Skeletal Horror)

Reward is now given as Large XP Lamp of XP in Slayer, Large XP Lamp in Farming, and Small XP Lamp in Woodcutting

Player still needs to replant seed after fighting.

Skiller

Changes:

Player needs to spend 5 minutes using woodcutting and pruning animations to chop it down. (similar to chopping Elder Tree or Evil Tree)

Player is awarded Large Star of BXP in Farming and Medium Star of BXP in Slayer and Woodcutting each.

Skiller needs to replant seed to reset cycle.

+1

Albeit - why would one give stars and the other one lamps? I'd suggest it should be the same for both (with the sizes still depending on what players did). Maybe stars (since bxp ingame sources still are somewhat scarce) with some token xp while doing your stuff.

Yeah there's two new problems with this:

1. If you make the distraction so common that the daily participation doesn't matter to them, then you're dangerously close to changing its purpose from being a distraction to being a regular training method, if you haven't crossed the line already.

2. It doesn't matter if the tickets given by dailyscape are the minority or not -- it'll still be the meta to just do the daily sinkhole and go do other dailies/other content after that. Especially when many people don't have lots of time to play every day.

Those people are currently slaves to dailyscape, and after this change they would still be slaves to dailyscape. The idea with removing dailyscape was so that people could choose what content to play and when, without time pressure like this.

As I said on post #70, sinkholes don't suffer from the same downside that most team-based minigames have: that they're not worth doing, because sinkholes are worth doing, hence why people do them now. Even in the worst case scenario that you wouldn't have enough people at the theme world all the time (again, I doubt it, but let's imagine so), given that sinkholes would be worth doing still, a FC would work better than for most other similar minigames, since people are actually motivated to play it when they can. And since they don't require much from you other than to show up, they don't suffer from endgame group bossing downside of exclusivity either.

That basically would be a thing prone to balancing - no matter if a free token would be there or not.

If the tokens obtained from gameplay are too rare (speak: so rare, that a single free token each day would have a drastical impact) the activity would be broken anyway, if they are so common a free token would become absolutely irrelevant it would probably end up too overpowered. Ideally it is balanced in a way you'll actually see them every once in a while, so you would be able to see that free token as a nice little extra - but not the source you need to depend on. You know - a nice little grab, but nothing you should fall into tantrums for when you were to miss it out for once - totally ignoring that ideally you'd be able to let them accumulate for a couple of days.

Well - likewise you shouldn't have to rely on d&ds to level something reasonably in the first place of course :)

You guys got any targeted/specific "dailyscape" things you'd like to see improved?
Got ideas on the ways devs can improve it?

Hah "post it on reddit". Sad to see we have to use that garbage rather than the official forum. But it also won't be as hard to falsify the popularity of the ideas on there though.
