WHAT THE HELL IS QA (AND HOW CAN YOU BE PART OF IT)?
Our team of QA (Quality Assurance) Analysts at Jagex test content, systems and applications to ensure that whatever we release is of an excellent quality and standard; essentially, that it works for you – our players.
The most important aspect of our analysts’ work is eliminating potential issues before anything goes live. We identify and report potential issues to the development team and the artists to resolve.
Testing is not black and white however, there is an art to it. You need to persevere through often repetitive tasks, think critically, multi-task, commit to deadlines, self-manage your workload and communicate effectively with developers, artists and producers – we are all one RuneScape team after all.
For an example of perseverance in QA, take the 200 lightning strike challenge in Final Fantasy 10. The task to successfully dodge 200 lightning strikes in a row without failing once. As a player, it’s infuriating to complete just once and you’d probably not want to look at that map ever again once you finally managed it. But could you do it several times? 10 times? 50 times? Take a moment to consider the testers that persevered through such a task to ensure it was working. That’s just hardcore.
It’s the QA Analysts’ job to find the million and one ways that a piece of content could possibly break, but also to do so within a time frame. As much as we’d like to have unlimited time to complete a project, working to a deadline is important if we’re to deliver new content in a timely manner.
This means that testing has to be prioritised and we focus on what’s really important in the time available - does a typo we missed really matter compared to a bug that prevents players from keeping their items/wealth on death in a safe zone? Or a bug that fails to give a player the 200,000,000 GP they won on Treasure Hunter?
“WE DON’T JUST TEST, WE CREATE TOO”
At Jagex QA Analysts do more than test. We help design content, help with how it’s balanced, suggest its rewards, perform player research and more… these aspects of content development are equally as important tasks for QA Analysts to consider and partake in with the rest of the development team. The “Quality” in our titles isn’t just to assure stability and excellent functionality, it’s to ensure players enjoy the content, that it meets their expectations and that we’ve learnt from past experiences.
In the current QA era at Jagex our QA Analysts even fix issues, develop content, create graphics – even release it. For example, Mod Manti designed and developed the Master Quest Cape last year and Mod Ramen has just designed and developed Nex; Angel of Death – they are QA Analysts and we’re very proud of their ambitions and achievements.
We do not limit our team within the boundaries of their core job description. You can develop any skills you want and will be supported in reaching any personal goals and career aspirations that you have. We believe and have proven that a more diverse and multi-skilled QA Analyst is more effective at finding defects, as they have a deeper and more logical understanding of why the game is doing what it’s doing.
QA is often the stepping stone into the games industry, which is great if you don’t have professional experience in other development disciplines. What’s fascinating about this though, is that in today’s world we are seeing more and more people stay in QA, because it’s more stimulating, versatile, flexible and can offer a real career.
For many studios now, QA now offers a real career path. As Juniors, QA Analysts, Seniors, Leads, QA Team Leaders and QA Managers. Don’t get me wrong though, if we see that someone in the team has a talent for developing content or creating graphics, we’ll always make sure they’ve considered their career path.
