People also complain that there are too many servers.

What type of competition are you talking about specifically.

I was unaware competition had left RuneScape. Silly me.

I am waiting for you to spin this into one of your hollow "reduce the number of servers" arguments.

People that want crowds can find them.

One thing the larger number of servers does is to make it harder for scammers to find victims, they have to hop more often to find people to fleece.

It also makes it more difficult for grief pkers to find penguin hunters and people doing clue scrolls.

I will concede to you a small server reduction. Let's eliminate the 2 worlds that perpetually have the lowest player count, worlds 97 and 106. Oh wait, those are the Bounty Hunter worlds so that must be the competition everyone loves so much.

Dad, thank goodness we have you here to articulate our resistance to the guys who want to shrink Runescape for some reason. No matter what we say to them, it's just water off a duck's back. I don't know why they don't understand myself, but glad you are here fighting the gudfite.

Jagex ran a poll in the past as to whether or not we wanted to reduce the amount of servers to make it feel fuller. The consensus was we liked it the way it is as there would be less competition for resources on each world.
Runescape is a mmo. Competition is an integral part of a mmo. If people don't want competition, why are they playing Runescape, an mmo?

Because it's fun?

Because theres many aspects to MMO's and not just 'competition'?

Because we can?

Because we want too?

Seriously. If you want competition then your welcome to drag your sorry ass to Abyssal demons or any of the decent training locations on F2P.

You'll get all the competition you want there.

You said it Meddyman!

There are plenty of things for people to do together. If somebody does not want to play in a group they should not have to. I have voted on this I remember it, and there may have been other polls. This crowding all the players together in small areas will not make them want to do things together. That has to be wanted by the players, and I do think there are already a lot of things going on for this competition. I do not do any competition myself, and not all players want to fight over mining rocks. I remember that too, and it was not the fun times you may think it is.

I dont recall this poll in any recent point. (Edit: I found the poll on wiki and it was held back in the beginning of 2014. That is only mildly dated)
Disregarding that, the only resources that have any competition at this point are Slayer monsters and mining, and soon mining will be excluded from that has well.
Runescape was not originally designed to be a solo played game and the aspects of it that are have drastically diminished to the point that not much would be lost condensing the population.

With more and more expansions and fewer and fewer players in recent years it just seems more practical to me.
I am not saying cram everyone onto 20 or 30 servers but bring it to a reasonable mid point where if you are not in one of the grand exchanges you can still meet people on the game.

At this very moment there are almost 60 servers with less then 100 people on them.

Being able to actually find people who like to participate in the same things has you is not such an outlandish idea I think. Working on the ultimate

So, the bottom line here is YOU want to change RuneScape to make EVERYONE ELSE play RuneScape the way you want them to play by forcing them into a smaller number of servers, ignoring every reason that people want to keep the staus quo.

Specifically, what are the activities that you want to participate in and cannot find others with the same interests? There is a good chance reducing the number of servers will upset a lot of people without solving your issue.

Be specific in what you are looking for instead of imposing changes on everyone else to make yourself happy.

EDIT: Your world count with servers with less that 100 players was conveniently taken at what was probably the low point of the daily ebb and flow of online players.

Player count is just now beginning to ramp up and the number of worlds with less than 100 players has already dropped to 49.

What is more interesting is that all but 3 of the F2P worlds are on the list. Should we eliminate all but 3 F2P worlds?

Two of the three lowest totals at the moment are W106 2 players and W97 12 players, from the failed Bounty Hunter update. I am all for eliminating these two worlds, or even better, remove bounty hunter and return the worlds to the players that lost their home worlds to accommodate PvP players.

Just looking at this issue in the number of players on servers at the low point of the player on line cycle hides all the nuances of the issue.

Dadizar you seem to not be getting the point. If you had never encountered the people you play this game with currently back in 2005 do you think you would have enjoyed the game nearly has much? That experience of entering the game and getting to meet and work with one another is diminished and vanishing. It is not helping the crippling fact that the player growth rate for this game is stunted but now people don't have access to one another while playing the game so its just not has enjoyable.

If you were a new comer starting a game and no one was around why would you keep playing.
Your view point is being narrow minded because the topic does not suit your agenda.
Condensing the servers would not make any kind of significant change to the game play is one of my points but you a blindly subscribing to a dated point a view.

In what way would there be a drastic change in game play for people besides more people at slayer creatures (ignoring the fact that in 4 months slayer will be completely revamped and that will be dated has well).

Talk about sticking to a point of view.

Your knee-jerk reaction to solving all problems by reducing the number of worlds is very narrow-minded.

I asked you some questions to try and develop a more meaningful conversation. Where do you want to see more people? What specific problems are you trying to solve? I doubt that reducing the number of worlds would solve any of them.

So sticking up for the rights of individuals on how they want to play the game is "blindly subscribing to a dated point a view"?

I think I am beginning to get a headache from having spent too much time in the "Reduce the Number of Worlds" echo chamber, where no one wanting to reduce the number of servers makes any effort to listen with those that disagree with them. Too much rhetoric and too little substance in the discussion.

Its not about finding people at particular locations. I have no issues playing the content i want to play. The problem is has stated in the title that the community is spread so thin that interaction between players is virtually none existent outside of maybe a clan and event alot of clans are inactive inside their own ranks.

How would having more players around effect the way anyone plays the game in a sense that it would damper your way of doing it?

No thanks

The lag introduced by increased population on worlds will make playing very annoying/unbearable. The servers have proven themselves time and time again that they cannot handle the stress put on under high capacity - they begin take longer to respond and at times, become unstable and frequently disconnect. This is not something that's fun to deal with, all for the small chance that people will magically talk and socialise with each other.

I don't put full trust in Jagex to quickly make the changes needed to boost the performance of the servers, so it can deal with the higher capacity.

No one wants to be "forced" to interact. Players like to either be alone or surround themselves with people they know. Content that tries to force "randomers" together is never well-received. It's later altered to suit those that don't want to be surrounded by tons of people.

Instances exist to prevent over-crowding and combat "crashing". The fight for resources is not fun to most people. They prefer to actually play the content they're playing without interruptions.

Throwing people together won't work. People will still visit the high-level areas that many new players can't access and will still use instances to hide themselves from view allowing them to enjoy content. To a new player, it will still be dead because "what? There's 1,000 people on world, but no one is here? Where is everyone? Oh they're in Priffdinas (soon-to-be Menaphos) or an instance alone or with friends".

The game is popular because it's very casual and is ideal for those that work and just want to come home and relax (as they're generally exhausted after dealing with the stress of work). This game doesn't require ultimate tryhardness to progress well. You can just chill around unlike other games out there. I wouldn't say it's still played for its social aspect any more.

The only time i have ever seen a entire server lag is during a new update. The only issues of lag from player population are when they are all condensed in a singular spot like the grand exchange or a event. I can log onto w2 without any issues has long has I am not standing in the grand exchange area and even that requires well over 1000 people on the server so I don't know what you mean.
At points in time multiple servers ran at max capacity and it was not nearly has big a deal has you enjoy making it out to be.
