There can be a cave entrance under ground where you dig your way through to make travelling faster because there are no trees, mountains, gates and other obstacles to get in the way of your travelling through the world, and you uncover various exits into the world out of your tunnel. You would get experience every time you use the tunnels.
There could also be resources in there for Mining and since the tunnels are so convenient they can be closer to a bank than maybe some other resources, more so when you are a higher level in Tunneling and uncover the most convenient exits. It would be a good excuse to add more to the world too, because you won't have to worry about any new additions cluttering the map because it will be on another level of map it would be an excuse to create a whole other map.
The skill could require a minimum level in other skills to make full use of the skill itself or possibly to even use it at all.
There could be exits that make certain WoodCutting and Fishing spots more convenient and/or you can even add new spots if that isn't a realistic possibility, and as I already have said there can be Mining resources down there as well.

Picture an Abyss for the whole map and that's what the skill could be at it's best.

Actually, this already exists: teleportation spells. It’s faster, can be cast almost everywhere and you get xp (except for the lodestones and jewellery).
Let’s not undermine Magic.

How can it be a boring skill when it is meant to be a skill that complements other skills. And when at its best it makes other skills of optimal ease.

And lodestones already undermine teleportation spells to make the game more accessible, this would do the same, it's not as if teleportation spells is all there is to magic, and they can always be improved as well to give them more usefulness anyways.

There's always going to be aspects of the game that become dead content anyways, and if it happens to make the game better and more accessible you do that in favor of a better game. Are you going to hold on so strongly to content that currently exists that you let the game itself end from people becoming bored of the game. If that were the case lodestones wouldn't have been made in the first place. When you see an opportunity to improve you do it if it makes the game more accessible and gives the game more longevity.

In short I don't believe it would render teleports unused, but even if it did, if it makes the game better; more accessible and gives the game more longevity it's worth the cost.
You probably wouldn't be able to make a list of all the times they made new content that made old content dead content, but if the result is better content it is worth doing. The object should be to make the best game, not to keep making content that doesn't encroach on preexisting content. It would be a very restricted vision for the game otherwise.

With all the teleports we have already it's hard to think what places we can't reach within one minute whatever the starting point. One of the following doors might have a towel behind it: [i ] - [2^3] - [3.14159]

It would be a whole other way of getting around, maybe there could even be a Nexus uncovered that when you uncover a path that leads from the Nexus to other portals in the tunnel a portal is opened up to go to a place. The portals are inactive until the path from the Nexus to that portal is uncovered.
So there would be points you can leave the tunnels both from climbing out of the tunnels and via portals powered by the Nexus.

Isn't that the same for all skills, it can be trained like Fishing, or Mining, or Woodcutting where you click on each resource spot until it disappears and then click on the next spot. Each click can get you so far so it wouldn't be THAT much clicking.
Lets not have any new skills where you have to click in a point and click game.
The difference being when the work is done the only work you do is to run through and use portals or climb out of spots opened up. With Agility you get shortcuts this skill itself is a shortcut so in that sense it would be like Agility, but to say it is like Agility in the other sense is to say it is like any skill at all.

We already have Mining.
Plus the number of tunnels you're proposing would severly weaken the planet as we already have an unhealthy number of cave systems, sewers, and other underground structures (naturally and artificially formed)

As the others have mentioned, we've already got plenty of methods of getting around via teleportation that tunneling won't be as useful as you think.
Plus banks and deposit boxes are already close enough.
We have porters, magic notepaper, and other services as well.
