For whatever reason the Runescape official forums have fallen into a state of disrepair, unloved and left to rot. Many players just ignore them altogether, using alternatives such as reddit or discord.
With Runescape mobile in the pipeline, reworking the forums is essential to supporting the longevity of the game in general. As how they are now makes the company look unprofessional, and seemingly disinterested in their own product or customers.

I know that the forums are not as crucial as the game itself in determining wether or not a new player sticks around. But they do need attention to improve the user experience.

So what can be done? Below are a few suggestions that I think will significantly improve how the RsOF are perceived;
- Clearer established rule set, that has a prominent place on the forums.
- Easier to find ‘Forum help’ (the number of threads asking where it is, is rediculous).
- Harsher / more immediate punishments for rule breaking.
- More J mod / Cm activity. We barely see you on here.
- ‘Light theme’ Honestly the current dark them can be a strain on the eyes.
- Integrated social media, ties into more mod activity, highlights what’s happening elsewhere.
- Sub forum for fan created content.
- Manage the News section to be up to date & post more current “news”.
- Old threads to be instantly deleted after so many days of inactivity.

Thank you reading and I hope you’ll at least consider a few of these suggestions.

Thanks for the reply Louiellen. In regards to the clearer established rule set My issues are that: 1. It’s easily overlooked. The main and forum specific rules are there, but if you don’t have to, then people are unlikely to bother. First time users should possibly have to read the rules before being able to continue, alternatively offenders would be redirected to the rules and made to answer a question based on them before being able to return to the forums.
2. Forumers have different ‘interpretations’ of the rules which leads to issues in terms of moderation. If the rules were clearly defined and not open to interpretation it would make the jobs of the mods easier.

Thank you for explaining forum process and limitations.

Regarding light theme personally I prefer dark for short stints, light if I’ve been looking at something for a while.

Regarding social media, I mean for it to integrate with the forums slightly, and provide greater transparency for upcoming updates. If Jmods are keen to direct traffic to other platforms then at least tease a preview on the forums with a link to reddit or whatever that provides greater insight.
Also allowing for hotlink support would streamline the process and make relevant posts viewable in the forums similar to how we have pictures from imgur.

Regarding news section, yeah it’s messy and full of stuff that happened years ago, Jmods should look after it a little better and delete threads that are no longer news.

Fan content: I was thinking just something simple to promote fan art / crafts. Maybe Jagex run competitions. Also a space for players who have helped get content into the game would be nice.

Regarding page 51, that’s fair enough, but with the current low traffic it’s not as effective as it once was. I’ve seen threads from 2013 long abandoned by their Op.

@ Jack Flac; that’s pretty cool, how’d you do it?
@ Apple juice Aj; I think that would be a great start and something worth looking at. A link to a tips page would also be useful, for stuff like Qfc, pictures, links & colour codes etc.

Thanks Kentt I was thinking of old confusing threads for deletion, but I guess you can’t really have one without the other, and I wouldn’t want important info threads being deleted.

Maybe give thread authors the ability to delete their own threads?

Tenebri thanks for posting the Jmod response quote, hopefully if there’s enough interest they’ll reconsider. Like I said earlier I think it’s pretty important with mobiles upcoming release.

It’s not really any specific rule that needs to be clearer, just the set in general as they’re currently fairly open to interpretation and that leads to confusion on what is and what isn’t acceptable. For example flame baiting is a fairly frequent occurrence but it’s rarely acted upon.

I can’t possibly comment on how the forums were before, or the vote to change to how they are now, as I wasn’t here. But it is clear that they have perhaps slipped too far in the opposite direction. With some notorious rule breakers seemingly allowed to continue unabated despite the exasperation’s of other forumers.

Leading to a culture of ‘if there getting away with it, so can I’.

That’s why I’d suggest some stricter penalties, like lowering there post count or docking their forum rank.

Are we not able to do that in Forum Games?

I was meaning more like arts & crafts stuff. A space for people to share the things that they have made. I know there’s third party sites for this, but seeing it actively encouraged on official forums may encourage more people to try it out.

Are you talking about the issue where a topic could be posted on Reddit rather than the Forums? I agree that this is an issue.

I was meaning the news forum just being a mess of old news, and people trolling each other on threadsno one really looks at anymore.
But I agree with your point about the off-site posting.

Look I’m not trying to trash the forums and I can certainly respect your opinion. But from the perspective of new players how good do the forums really appear?

We’ve got ‘news posts’ from last November & players who seem to revel in the notoriety they gain from frequent spam, trolling / abusive posts.

Maybe the forums don’t need something as massive as a rework and I don’t think the ideas listed are the only way to go about ‘fixing’ what I perceive to be issues. I do think it’d be worthwhile though for anyone in a position to be able to influence the forums to at least discuss some possible actions before the release of mobile.

Even something as simple as a little spring cleaning to tidy them up a bit.
