I very rarely ever saw it but why did Jagex change the splash page from the really detailed, appealing layout it had before and go to the boring, new one? The current splash page is found here. Before, it had several different categories such as one that told people what RuneScape is/how it's unique, one for the social features of the game, even one detailing what OSRS is.

Now, it's just one page with a very, very short description of the game and some info that talks about how you can play, the ability resume playing if you left, etc. It's rather boring and uninformative in comparison to the old one. I get that the old one was a bit more verbose than it needed to be but I loved occasionally having it pop up for me when I'd delete cookies, I imagined myself as a person finding the game for the first time and it totally hooked me. I would think it would do the same for actual new players.

So basically, this thread is just basically for me to say that I much, much preferred the old splash screen over the new one because the new one is boring and lacks enough information to truly draw in potential new and returning players.

Sad to hear you aren't a fan.

For everything relating to a new player experience, we (generally) A/B test and see which performs better. The page at the moment performed better, and I believe you might actually have experienced a variance of that running.

People frankly don't read huge paragraphs, and like pretty pictures. Ultimately we have to follow what works best, and we're not going to sacrifice bringing in new players (and the actual results that follow) for much of anything*.

* My intention with that is clear within the scope of this thread, please don't take it out of context.

Maybe people just don't like reading all that much.

A sad reality. :|

Hey Mod Lyon, thanks for the response! As I said to UrekMazino, that's a sad reality these days, especially since I love reading. But that being said, I totally get that the new one performed better, but I still think it could be a tad more descriptive. For example, there is basically no mention of the social features of the game which is a major part of what makes the game so great.

No worries, I understood what you were saying and I get where the team is coming from on this, I just think it could stand to be just a tad bit more descriptive. :)

Having experience myself with creating responsive website having pictures and lumbs of texts creates problems when resizing yours browser making the text start to wrap around things, or ripping apart, you rather not like to see happen.
Pictures and texts both should be used to offer a 'give away' in what to expect and tickle ones interest but certainly not tell a lot otherwise strangers will not be interested to find out what's behind all of this.

I do wonder for quite some time if that space was put there on purpose?
