So, you do not want to use your smartphone or you don't own one but you still want to protect your account using Authenticator? Then this is the way to go.

Step 1. Download WinAuth (or another Authenticator application)

"WinAuth is a portable, open-source Authenticator for Windows that provides a time-based RFC 6238 authenticator and common implementations, such as the Google Authenticator. WinAuth can be used with many Bitcoin trading websites as well as supporting [several games]."

Step 2. Logging in

On the RuneScape website, click on the "Account" button on the top right and log in. From there, you should notice a drop down menu called "Authenticator". Click that and click "Enable now".

Step 3. Setting up the Authenticator

Go straight to step 2 on the Authenticator page, and click on "Code won't scan?". You'll now get a custom code that's unique to your account. Copy that code and open WinAuth.
In Winauth, click on "Add" and pick "Google Authenticator".
You can pick a name here for your Google Authenticator. Mine is my RSN, "Armoede", so I know which code belongs to which account. :)
Paste your custom code in the "Secret Code" section.
Click on "Verify Authenticator." You should now get another code.

Step 4. Finishing up

Copy the other code you got and paste it on the RuneScape Authenticator page under step 3.

Click on "Ok" in WinAuth. You're now asked to add a pass-word to your WinAuth. I suggest you make one.

Now, every time you open WinAuth, you'll be asked to fill in your WinAuth Pass. Every time you want to log in to the game, you can now hit the "Refresh" and you'll get a timed automated code required to log in to RuneScape.

(Thanks to sendblink23 for giving additional information)

Congratulations, your account is now secure and there were no smartphones involved! :)

Common Issues & Other Stuff

The code I receive from the Authenticator isn't working, why not?

The code your Authenticator generates changes every 1 minute or so. It might be that you've entered your code too late.
Also, you could've forgotten to hit the refresh button on WinAuth.

If that doesn't solve it, right-click your Authenticator and click on Sync Time.

It's still not working! What do I do?

This is probably because the date and time on your PC is not completely up to date.
To set it up, you need to:

1. Click on the date and time that's shown on the lower right corner of your screen
2. Click on Date and time settings (could be slightly different worded, I'm on a Dutch Windows)
3. Click on Change Timezone on the Date and Time tab and pick your current timezone.
4. Click on Change Settings on the Internet Time tab, check the box that says "synch clock with an internet time server" and type in time.windows.***

(*** = the first 3 letters of commercial)

5. Click on "Ok" to save those settings and then click on "Ok" again to close the Date and Time settings.

Your clock should now be synched. :)

How To: Set Up WinAuth on USB

Step 1. Download WinAuth

Not that hard. Download WinAuth and drag and drop it in your USB drive, preferrably in a seperate folder.

Step 2. Make it portable

Copy winauth.xml from C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\WinAuth and drag and drop it in the same folder as your WinAuth on your USB drive.

Step 3. ????

Step 4. PROFIT

Your WinAuth is now portable and will not save any settings on the computers you use it on. :)

Tips & Common Issues

1. "RuneScape Authenticator"

There is no such thing. Don't look for one. When you add an authenticator, pick the Google Authenticator one. ;)

2. I don't like hitting refresh every time for a new code

Don't worry, you can right click your authenticator and pick "auto refresh". This will continuously update your code.

3. This isn't secure enough for me.

Well then, let's make it more secure.

Right click your Authenticator and pick Set Pass-word. Set a pass-word. You now have 2 pass-words on WinAuth to protect your RuneScape data.

Additionally, you could set it up so WinAuth is only usable from the computer you're on.
To do that, click on the gear icon on the bottom right of WinAuth and click "Change Protection".
On the bottom you'll find encryption options, one for the computer and one for the user specifically. Check whichever option you want.
Et voila, your WinAuth can now only be used on your computer.

IMPORTANT: If you're going to reformat your disk or reinstall Windows or delete your User account, remember to uncheck those options if you're planning to back-up WinAuth. If you don't uncheck them, your WinAuth will not work once you're done reformatting / reinstalling / w/e.

4. I want more devices to generate codes!

Simply use your secret code (the one to set WinAuth up) with another Authenticator app. :)

5. I don't know what my secret code is anymore!

If you've lost your secret code, don't worry. You can get it from WinAuth by right-clicking your RS Authenticator, clicking "Show Secret Key" and filling in your WinAuth pass-word.

6. What if I somehow lose access to WinAuth? How do I get my secret key then?

You might want to write the code down on a piece of paper and store it somewhere where you won't lose it. That way you can use your Secret Key with a new authenticator if you lose access to your old ones. :)

Thanks YtHaar-Mej for providing step-by-step instructions for Scapers who use a Mac. :)

Mac Authenticator
Adding in for MAC OS, download: JAuth
Search for it on google and a GitHub page should appear, download the zip

1. Download and install a program called 'JAuth' to your computer. The .dmg installer is found inside the folder "Installers" called: JAuth_macos_1_0.dmg - During installation you will be asked for a Secret Code(leave it opened, follow next steps for this).

2. On your web browser, log into the runescape homepage, hover over account in the top right and click 'Authenticator'. On the next screen, press 'Set up now'.

3. On your web browser, you will find a QR code for smart phones to scan. Don't worry about this, we don't need it. Press 'I can't scan the code' and you should be given a 16-character code and be told to select 'Time based'. Copy the 16-character code.

4. Now place this 16-character code where you were asked in Step 1 and finalize installing.

5. Finally then simply open the JAuth app and it should directly give you the randomized timed code for login in to runescape.
