There was no additional writing anywhere.

But that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
” she told him, rolling her eyes in his direction. “
Although I do admit, working on it is something that’s more difficult than I had thought it would be. Finding the time is the worst, since the inspiration for it comes at the worst times...that stupidly small amount I have there is multiple months of very on-and-off work. Oh, and Zetael isn’t the main character, and since you only seem to have actually read the prologue I’ll just tell you that it’s the only part of the story, save perhaps the epilogue, that’s from his point of view.

Holding up a finger, as if to say, ‘I’ll answer your accusation in a second.’ she picked up the cup and took a gulp of whatever was inside. It looked for a minute like she wanted to hold it there and make him wait out of irritation, but that didn’t happen, and she instead placed it down, swallowed, and continued, “
I would like to note, however, that I’m not pretending to be anything, unless me not having actually gotten a single book published due to the inability to actually finish something means that I’m pretending. I am absolutely trying to make a living walking around and writing about what I find inspiration from. You seem to be basing whatever this accusation is on a single fact, and it’s about as flimsy as a plotline I would come up with.

Taking a breath, she shook her head and kept talking. “
I’ll go over this for my own benefit, since you seem to have convinced yourself this is all my fault. I’m far too calm, right? Well, might I ask what the point of panicking is? Whether or not I start screeching and cowering in the corner won’t change anything about what you think, and there’s no way I can have a civil discussion if I’m having a mental breakdown.

You’ve got a gun in my face, and to me that means I really shouldn’t be doing much since any move I make can be interpreted as a hostile action that you might use as justification to open fire on me. I’m trying to stay alive, so that seems a bit contrary to my intentions.

Also, I would like to point out that there’s absolutely no reason for me to not be calm. I already told you that I do not believe there’s any danger, but since you clearly think I’m either stupid or insane, or at least thought that when I told you, I’m not going to expect you to actually consider that as a reason. I’ll just note that your weapon is the most danger I’ve faced so far tonight. However, let’s ignore that, since it doesn’t seem to matter to you. You’re accusing me of...what, exactly? I’m using this as a cover story? What exactly am I, then? You might as well give me the full accusation instead of some vague declaration that I’m nothing specific.

Hmm... yes, that mildly annoyed and defense attitude when someone criticized her work did in fact match up with what Harry knew about most writers. However, her claim about trying to make a living through writing, followed by her claim about never finishing a book... that just didn't add up. Where did she get her money?

"That's the problem," Harry pointed out, "If you are what I think you are, then telling you what I think you are would be a stupid idea. What I will say is that there are details of your story which don't entirely add up, and the way you're talking gives me the feeling that you rehearsed this explanation beforehand. Sure, you might be innocent, but there's still a good chance you might be involved in all of this, and I can't just dismiss that." He set the book down on a nearby table, then set his hat down next to it, and finally he sat down. He still held his gun, but he was no longer pointing it at her.

"So, that means we're going to sit here and wait. Maybe have a discussion about literature to pass the time."

Annie repiled with a smile with a bow,"It's an honor to meet you Lias Tremley." She was very excited to get this adventure to get started. They started to walk towards the out post that Lias told them.

When the group got to the outpost and heard what Lias just said. She agreed with her to be cautious. She drew her pistol ready to fight if needed too as she followed.

“Hello, Lias,” Elizabeth had said when the woman introduced herself. “My name’s Elizabeth Watson.”

“Mm? Oh, an’ oi be Rory.”

* * *

“Sure is quiet,” Rory remarked once they reached the outpost.

“Yeah, let’s stay quiet, nice and easy...”

Rory nodded, keeping low. He withdrew a revolver, just in case he needed to use a free hand. They approached the stables.

“If anyone’s in dehr, we better get deh jump on em.”

“They look like stables. Maybe that other guy went here? Does anyone know how his horse looked like?” Elizabeth asked...

One by one the rest of the group introuced themselves and revealed their abilities, or rather... most did. The gunslinger, Rory, didn't seem to see fit to share what he could do, seeming to think it was all plain and clear. So presumably a decent shot with his guns and... Questionably skilled in CQC with them. Elizabeth apparently knew how to use that sword of hers - a rapier if Isaac's knowledge was correct - along with pistols. How skilled she was remained to be seen given her lack of action during the roadhouse fight, but the telltale signs of wealth could be noticed here and there about her, and with her weapon being a rapier... Could she possibly be trained in the Noble Fencing style?

A question for another time. The youngest among them, the teenager Annie, confidently overstated her abilities and referred to him most bizarrely. Where his gaze had been shifting over the group it focused on her for a few moments, his eyebrow raising at her unusual manner of speaking - referring to him not only once, but twice in the same sentence by his full name and rank. How foreign was the girl that she was taught to speak in such a strange way? Regardless he chose to correct the issue right away, adding maybe a touch too sharply, "Isaac works fine, kid."

Then there was their defacto leader, the soldier introducing herself as Lias. Between the group of them he couldn't blame her for not sounding especially confident, truth be told he wasn't feeling too certain having his back watched by most of them either. But the cards had been dealt, so they had to make the best of it - less he back out now, but what kind of man would he be then?

He sighed as he turned back to face front. "Let's hope the Goddess is smiling down on us tonight."

-

Soon they arrived on the outskirts of their destination - the outpost's lights standing out clearly against its nearly black surroundings. While at first glance nothing seemed amiss it didn't take a trained eye to spot the

details that practically screamed 'something is very wrong here'. The most prominent one being the lack of guards watching the perimeter - and as anyone who'd been outside town walls would know, having no guards around your campsite, or outpost, was an immense no-no. When monsters roamed the wilderness any place left unchecked could result in disaster.

Lias was first to speak up, unsure of the situation but very much on guard. Isaac tightened his grip on his rifle, carefully scanning the trees around the outskirts of the outpost as much as the outpost itself - ever wary of an ambush lying in wait. They started moving up following her lead, beginning towards the stables without any real coordination in their ranks. Seeing the potential for trouble Isaac stepped up to the front so he was level with Lias, glancing over his shoulder so his gaze could move from her across the others.

"Minimum two metre spread between us on approach, think the shape of a W, it keeps firing lanes open and lessens the risk of collateral shots from the enemy," He told them, taking charge of their movement formation. If Lias was the front middle, he was on the front right side. "The two in the back keep an eye on the rear, last thing we need is for someone to get the jump on us."

As they moved up Isaac kept his rifle in a mostly raised position, ready to raise it fully in no time to snap off a shot - if it came down to it. Trigger discipline would be important here, there was no telling if they would stumble across an enemy or a friendly. His gaze drifted between the front and the sides, carefully watching their flanks as best he could - being in the open like this was far from a good tactical position.

"Caught a glimpse of it before he took off, it's a black horse - couldn't tell if it was a gelding or mare."

Oh, great, you’re one of those.
” she said with a sigh. “
You realize you’re sounding just as suspect as me right now, right? Walking in and declaring that it’s my fault that a bunch of people are dead while having absolutely nothing to back up your story as well as nothing to prove that you aren’t doing precisely what you’re accusing me of is a classic tactic for someone trying to shift the blame onto a party that is not at fault. I’m sure you don’t believe that, or don’t care ‘Because I’m innocent.’ but if my actions are suspect then yours are just as much so. You’re acting as though there’s irrefutable proof that I’m in the wrong and that you’re an avatar of justice, when I’m sure I could make a vague argument that paints you as just as much of a guilty party as me.

You’re the one making the vague accusations and then not even giving me a chance to defend myself, too.
” she continued, and a twinge of annoyance that hadn’t been present before was beginning to creep into her voice. “
What exactly could I be that telling me would be a bad idea? What am I going to do if you did? What did you even find that’s so damning that you immediately came and accused me of abstract criminal activities? You aren’t making any sense, and your oh-so-confident ‘doesn’t add up’ lines just make you sound like a conspiracy theorist.

Add to it that you’re accusing my of being involved while dragging me into something that I don’t want to be part of, didn’t even bother to give me back my damn work, and are now guarding it with a shotgun, and it just paints you as an ass. You can discuss whatever you want with yourself, and I’ll just start writing up the speeches I need to rehearse for my future deceptions.
” she told him, withdrawing another notebook from her bag and opening it to the first page.

Picking up the pen that she had been using for the book that he now guarded, she began writing in the new one, muttering under her breath to herself as she did so.

Outpost - Exterior

It didn’t take much for them to notice that the stables were empty. In fact, they didn’t even need to go all the way inside or even get more than twenty feet from it, given that the doors were fully open and the entirety of the interior was visible from their approaching side. There wasn’t any room for someone to be concealed inside, either, unless they had taken a great amount of effort to conceal themselves inside some hay piles or ninja-style up above the door.

It seemed Lias did not consider either of those to be extremely viable or dangerous, as she gave only a quick look inside from the doorway - once they reached it - before saying, “
Nothing. If anyone here had a horse, they either left or someone let the horses run. I didn’t see any around, though, and I doubt they would have gone too far…

Motioning for everyone to continue, she moved to the side of the building before looking out and over towards the tavern. Anyone else that did the same would notice the pair sitting inside, and would hopefully be able to tell that one of the two was the guy that they had sent ahead of them. He was facing the other individual with his shotgun sitting on the table next to him, while the other individual seemed to be writing in a book on the table in front of her. Apart from the, however, there was still no movement at all.

Hey, that’s...come on, let’s see if he knows anything more.
” she told them, moving over to the tavern door and walking inside. When she entered, she spoke to Harry, asking, “
Did you find anything?

Harry chuckled as the woman let out another storm of words. He placed his shotgun in his lap and set his feet up on the table while she continued speaking. "Lady, listen..." he began, but then the door opened.

"Ah, you're here." He said as some familiar faces entered the room, and then his expression turned grim. "I was too late. The outpost was attacked maybe an hour or so before I got here. Most if not all the guards are dead, and everyone else scattered when the attack happened. The armoury wasn't looted and they didn't even touch the inn, so from what I can tell they weren't here to steal anything - I have my own 'conspiracy theory' as to why, but I'll get to that later."

He paused for a moment, giving them time to digest the information. Then he pointed to the aspiring writer. "She was the only one here. Been here since the attack, apparently, and wasn't the least bit concerned. I thought that was a bit suspicious, so I'm keeping an eye on her." He scratched his chin. "Oh, and there are still a couple rooms left in the main building that I haven't explored, so we still need to check those out."
