Phishing Emails – How to Stay Safe

We are aware that some of you have recently received a variety of phishing emails: emails claiming to be from Jagex or RuneScape, designed to steal your log in details. We understand this can be frustrating, and we can assure you we are working hard to stop the circulation of these emails and to take down the fraudulent websites linked to them.

In order to help you recognise these emails, we have set up a dedicated thread - Phishing – Scams and Info - on the RuneScape forums, which contains a short guide on how to check if an email is genuine or not. This thread also lists all known email phishing scams and will be regularly updated with details on any new emails that we become aware of.

Don’t be fooled by Account Emails

One important thing to remember is that Jagex will never email you regarding account-related issues. This includes emails regarding infractions, bans, moderator status or anything else that relates to the status of your account. These issues will always be dealt with through the message centre.

How did they get my email address?

The chances are they have no idea you even play RuneScape. A common method spammers use these days to send phishing emails is to generate lists of random email addresses, normally of extremely large volumes. The law of averages means that at least a small proportion of these will hit the inboxes of RuneScape players. We are dedicated to fighting phishing emails and have never compromised your email addresses.

Need to report a phishing email?

If you receive an email which you believe is a phishing attempt, you can report it by forwarding it to us at reportphishing@jagex.com. We are constantly working on new ways to help in the fight against phishing and we will, of course, keep you informed of any new features we can provide in the future to help you. In the meantime, the best form of defence is awareness, so take a moment to read the Phishing – Scams and Info thread and the guide provided.

Kind regards,
Mod Sadie
