Chat

Introduction

Chatting in RuneScape is a major part of the game and you'll find that there are many ways to keep in touch with your friends, organise trades or interact with other players. You can chat to those around you simply by typing into the chat box or by using the Quick Chat feature.

The chat window
The chat window

The chat box - located by default at the bottom left of the game window - shows you any messages you send or receive.

Although fully customisable, you are most likely to see the image to the right by default. Along the top of the interface are six tabs, five relating to individual chat channels. The other tab is for Emotes. There are also nine yellow buttons beneath the channel tabs which act as filters, and a button for reporting abuse.

Chat Channels

Chat channels are a method for grouping chat together and limiting who has access to it. For example, the clan chat channel will only allow members of your clan to chat there.

The channels are:

Channel Description
All Chat icon
All Chat
This channel is the local channel. It shows you any public chat in the area around you, chat from all of your other channels and information from the game itself such as level up messages.
Private Chat icon
Private Chat
This channel is private, it shows messages sent directly to you that cannot be seen by anyone else.
Friends Chat icon
Friends Chat
This channel will display messages from your current Friends Chat channel, if you are in one. This can be your own channel, or one that belongs to another player.
Clan Chat icon
Clan Chat
This channel will display messages from your Clan Chat channel, if you are a member of that clan. This can be a clan that you own, or one that belongs to another player that you are a member of.
Guest Clan Chat icon
Guest Clan Chat
If you are not a member of a clan but you know the name of the clan, you can join their clan chat and this channel will display messages from that chat.
Trade and Assistance icon
Trade and Assistance
All trade requests and offers of assistance will appear in this chat area.
Twitch icon
Twitch Chat
All twitch.tv chat will appear in this chat area. You cannot access this channel unless you are logged into twitch.tv.

The All Chat channel is selected by default. If you select any other chat channel it will visibly change to show that you are watching that type of chat. When watching a specific type of chat, if you receive a message of a different type, its button will flash to attract your attention. For instance, if you are viewing Clan Chat and you receive a private message, the Private filter button will flash to alert you to the message.

Filters

Along the top left of the chat interfaces you'll find various filters. Filters, when activated, hide unwanted information. Filters are different to channels as they only hide what is shown in an individual channel rather than preventing discussion or who can view it that discussion. Depending on what channel you are in the filters will change.

Note that if you have turned a particular chat filter off that channel no longer flash when you receive a new message, as all chat of that type is hidden.

Chat filters

Normally, the chat filters will show as individual icons, but if there is not enough space for these, their icons will be replaced with a small blue button (see the image to the right). Clicking on this button will reveal a menu showing the different filters and the status of those filters.

Chat Options

Along the top right of the chat interfaces you'll find various chat options. Unlike filters which can hide unwanted information, the options will change how chat works.

Text Effects

Chat effects are ways of making your chat text appear coloured or animated. This is popular with players who want to attract a little extra attention to what they are saying.

The default colour for chat text is yellow, but there are other colours available to use with your chat text.

The table below shows all the available effects that can be used to alter how the text is displayed.

Effect Preview Function
red Red text preview Make the text red.
green Green text preview Make the text green.
white White text preview Make the text white.
cyan Cyan text preview Make the text cyan.
purple Purple text preview Make the text purple.
flash1 Flash1 text preview Make the text change colour between red and yellow
flash2 Flash2 text preview Make the text change colour between cyan and blue
flash3 Flash3 text preview Make the text change colour between dark green and light green
scroll Scroll text preview Makes the text move across the character's head, from right to left
shake Shake text preview Make the text vibrate quickly up and down
wave Wave text preview Make the text move up and down slowly
wave2 Wave2 text preview Make the text move up, down, inwards and outwards slowly
slide Slide text preview Make the text drop down from above the character's head
glow1 Glow1 text preview Makes the text gradually change colour from red through to orange, yellow, green and cyan
glow2 Glow2 text preview Makes the text gradually change colour from red through pink, magenta, blue and then back to red
glow3 Glow3 text preview Makes the text gradually change colour from white to green and white to cyan

These commands are used in the following format - <colour>:<effect>:<text>

For example, to make the line of text, "Selling cut ruby!", display in red, we would use - red:Selling cut ruby!.

To have the text scroll and be displayed in cyan, we would use - cyan:scroll:Selling cut ruby!

Privacy

You can change who will see that you are online by clicking the buttons in the far right. The Online private icon means that no one will be able to see if you are online or contact you via private chat. The Online friends icon means that only players on your Friends List will be able to see if you are online or contact you via private chat. The Online public icon means that everyone can contact you. Players on your blocked list will never be able to see your online status.

This button also controls how other players can interact with you, such as whether they can send you trade or assist requests.

Note that Jagex moderators (JMods) will always be able to send you messages regardless of your message settings. They can be recognised by the gold crown next to their name.
