Development History

Before June 24th climbing boots had bonuses and were commonly used by players in the Wilderness as a cheap defensive item. After the update, all climbing boots in prior possession were converted to Rock climbing boots in order to separate the low level quest item which needed to be cheap from a useful and highly beneficial piece of armour.

However the conversion provided a relatively small number of players who happened to have considerable stocks of the boots (as spares for combat) a considerable income as the sell-back price of rock climbing boots was significantly higher than Grand Exchange price of climbing boots previously. This was a contentious issue which Jagex later admitted that they could have handled differently and the fix was borne out of a desire to fix problems as they saw them[1].
