This is the discussion page for the Wiki Feedback page and is aimed at the discussion of possible improvements to the RuneScape Wiki software, any Red Label/edit locked pages in the Game Guide, Wiki Guide, or Scribbles & Sketches areas, and to the Customer Support as a whole.
If there is an improvement that you wish to see in the content on Blue Label/unlocked pages then please feel free to Go Forth & Edit. If you're not sure how to go about doing this then the Community Hub is a great place to get help and advice on how to do it. If a project is better suited for the Community Hub then please feel free to move it there.
Things that might need changing
- Any Customer Support/Red Page information that has not been included.
- Any Customer Support/Red Page information that is inaccurate or out of date.
- Any Customer Support/Red Page information that is not clearly worded.
- Any Customer Support/Red Page information that is in the wrong place.
- Any sections that should be added to Customer Support/Red Page sections.
- Any technical changes that would help improve the wiki as a whole.
Discussion Etiquette
- Please keep all discussions polite and constructive. If someone has an idea for an alteration then respect it, even if you do not agree with it.
- If a change will be made is down to Jagex Customer Support team. A suggestion will be evaluated on the usefulness of the suggestion, the arguments for and against, and the operational ability of Jagex Customer Support to complete the project. It will not be evaluated on the number of people for or against the change.
- Inclusion of a project into the Accepted section does not mean it will go ahead, just that at the time of inclusion it was something that we wanted to do. Operational and technical considerations can result in projects being removed. The simple fact is that Jagex has limited resources so must split them according to ever changing needs and goals.
- Please check Previous Suggestions before posting up a new suggestion. If it is covered in a Previous Suggestion your idea will most likely be rejected.
- If a project is quick enough for us to do we may well just do it and move it to the Completed Section.
- JMods will be on this page a lot. Please don't edit their words or the Accepted / Rejected sections as that could be considered defacement.
- If you just want to show support for a suggestion in principle please add it to a support line by signing your name (~~~~). We don't work on 'votes' but it does help us gauge the popularity of an idea.
Current Suggestion
Suggestions will be moved to the Rejected or Accepted section once Customer Support have had a look at them. Please use the format in the example below.

Recent Changes
This one's a bit more simple and straightforward I think, as well as significantly more useful for keeping up to date.
Adding a Special:RecentChanges link at the bottom menu bar (next to View Linking Pages, View Revision History, Report) would be a substantial improvement in making monitoring and suggestions/fixes much easier and faster. Having to go through anywhere between 2-4 extra page loads to get to it on every single attempt isn't a very effective use of either time or bandwidth.

Direct editing of watch lists
Watch lists could use a great deal of improvement in one respect... There is currently no method for directly editing or viewing your entire watch list. Having this feature to be centrally managed, viewed, and edited in one location would greatly simplify its use. Adding a new Special per-user page, for example, Special:WatchlistManager, would be ideal.
15-Oct-2012 04:22 BST
- Special:Watchlist ? You can't edit things directly, but you can view them and unwatch them by clicking on the page link and choosing 'unwatch'. - Mod Michelle 16-Oct-2012 09:13 BST
Expanding Image support - SVG
Any chance of expanding support for images to include SVG files (see the official specifications on the World Wide Web Consortium site for more details)?
Granted, some older browsers may need a plugin to view them, but it would certainly help for constructing maps, charts, separating "markup highlighting" from images, general graphics functions, and a number of other situations.
Because it is text-based, it would also significantly reduce storage requirements in most cases.

Recent Changes
I'm an administrator at a big How-To wiki called wikiHow, and a very successful tool we have is called Recent Changes Patrol. Users can patrol all the recent changes to the wiki, and any bad faith edits can be reverted with the push of a button. I fear that vandalism will be a big problem here as well, so I hope you consider this idea.
- You could start a Community Project for RC Patrolling - hopefully we get undo sooner or later ;) King Runite1 23-Nov-2011 15:45 GMT
- It might, indeed, be convinient for the link (Special:RecentChanges) to be put up somewhere, but you can still patrol as it stands. Remember that to undo something, load the revision you want to access from the history, and then just re-save the page. :) Ale Jrb 23-Nov-2011 15:49 GMT
- Now I found that link. Is there any way to make it.... easier? Such as the functions on wikiHow. You click the first diff, then that opens up what there is now with more functions such as Rollback or Mark as Patrolled etc., so you can go to the next one easier. Kozlov8 23-Nov-2011 16:41 GMT
'User' and/or 'Community' namespace(s)
As it stands, there is no obvious way of separating 'meta' pages and actual articles. In most wikis, this is done using the namespace system, and I think it could be helpful to implement that here (especially before the wiki gets hugely busy and it becomes too much of a job).
I've already noticed that people have started making custom user pages in the 'Community' section (i.e. Community - User_Name). This is already confusing - firstly, because it shows that the community sections (such as the hub, and editing guides) aren't in their own section, and also because it connects individual users with the community section as a whole, which is weird. It would be fantastic if these pages could be autolinked from signatures and contribution pages etc.
Being able to create a user page is an expectation in wikis because of all the other ones that do it, and having this type of page not in a namespace of its own could very rapidly become incredibly difficult to manage. Ale Jrb 23-Nov-2011 16:06 GMT
- I agree - the only reason they are in "Community - {NAME}" is because they were initially created as just "{NAME}" and were moved. Using the User: namespace or forbidding all non-wiki content pages (how many players would create them if they knew!!!) is the best course of action King Runite1 23-Nov-2011 16:11 GMT
- I'm gonna go ahead and copy this to Comments:Mod AJD'S Help Page as it seems that is where stuff gets seen. Ale Jrb 23-Nov-2011 17:21 GMT

I was going insane trying to find out how to make my signature for posting in discussions and happened across this page and found out that the 4 tildes work. Thanks a bunch! BTW, I saw a clan create a page about themselves and wondered if that was "legal play" on the wiki... if it is, I'd consider creating one about my clan. It would be great to record some or most of our history like this. Good I Snipr 29-Nov-2011 18:52 GMT

Sysops
Per discussion here: Comments:Mod AJD'S Help Page I have moved this discussion here for better public debate.
Will there be a class of editor created out of the current player base, whom will be granted sysop editing abilities including but not limited to page moving, rollback rights, page protection rights, and page deletion rights? What would be the benefits? What would be the consequences? How should these editors be 'picked'? The Draziw 24-Nov-2011 14:09 GMT
- I think I first thought of it, so I guess I'd support such a proposal. Bring on the WMods! Personally, I'd leave it a couple of months though until the wiki is properly up and running and we have a properly dedicated set of users. Everyone wants to have a go atm, so activity isn't reflective on how much work they'll put in after the initial rush Camdozaal 24-Nov-2011 23:50 GMT
- I'd definitely support it. Personally, I don't even think it's optional, but rather, a necessity. The RuneScape Wiki will continue to grow in popularity, and as it does, it'll continue to grow in spam, vandalism, and generally problematic users as well. There will also be an obvious increase in the amount of pages that need moved, protected, and deleted. Normal users can, of course, help with many of the problems the wiki will face, but for the things they're unable to help with, there should be people (other than JMods) who can. --Wormhole 25-Nov-2011 00:04 GMT
I disagree with adding mods to the wiki. This is supposed to be a player based wiki, and adding sysop powes similar to how the unofficial Runescape Wiki works totally disrupts this. There will no doubt be vandalism but lets leave combating that up to regular people. Do we really need special powers to make this wiki a great place? I think not.
The Jagex moderators in charge of this wiki are doing a good job with the little bit of vandalism Iv'e seen.
Also don't forget one of the requirements to edit this wiki is Runescape membership. With that requirement, I really don't see many people taking a big risk to their account just to cause some trouble.
Finally, what makes this wiki so appealing to me is that it's 100% edited by active Runescape players. If this starts becoming similar to the unofficial Runescape wiki, then what's the point? Wolf Soul 25-Nov-2011 19:54 GMT
- From what I can tell there is one JMod responsible for the wiki so far. Whilst he may be tackling vandalism full on, he is part of the daytime crew. There are another 16 or so hours, not incuding weekend where the wiki can be vandalised. Don't go thinking membership is a deterrent, the forums can tell you that much.
- Sysops have far more in their arsenal that counter-vandalism measures like changes to titles of pages, something we do need on a more regualr basis, especially early on in the wiki's creation. Sysops would also have a good knowledge of the wiki's inner workings and would be the people to go to when you need some help that the project teams do not offer. Sysops may also be able to lock pages, for ones that will never change, or ban people on short term basis. I doubt Jagex will ever give them the ability to perm-ban users, but temp-bans are a quick way to stop mass vandalism. Camdozaal 25-Nov-2011 21:38 GMT
- Agree - This is a wiki and the purpose is for it to be run by the community. Sysops are part of the community. Nothing changes about that. They are only users that have the ability to move/rename/delete/roll back/and restrict editing from some users. This is necessary in a community-run wiki. Sysops are not dictators, they can be removed or added at the community's call. Baldwin 26-Nov-2011 01:56 GMT
- As Sysops would be part of the community, would we get the chance to nominate them ourselves? No doubt they would need to be Jagex approved, but users are going to notice other users more than one or two JMods. Camdozaal †¢26-Nov-2011 23:05 GMT

- Currently, we aren't getting a huge amount of vandalism, or pages that need moving/deleting, or users blocking. However, things might change when we get a the depth needed to rival that of other fansites. Right now I'd think that JMods are able to cover it all, but if we get more editors or edits that need checking then it might be an idea so that they can contribute to some of their projects that we can't really do. - Loggy C 21-Dec-2011 10:00 GMT
Some Stylesheet Tweaks
I noticed that content with headings is being shifted underneath floated content (see Abyssal demon for an example). It seems to be caused by a clear:both declaration in jamwiki.css on line 76. I was able to get headings to align properly by removing that declaration, and tidied things up by adding overflow:hidden.
I haven't tested it in IE, so I'm not sure how well it'd hold up there. Still, hopefully worth a try. Arengeir 24-Nov-2011 16:33 GMT

Style Attribute
I believe, since we can not edit the stylesheet, we need access to the style attribute. This will allow us to be more flexible in how we style things. (Such as width, color, text-alignment, vertical-alignment, backgrounds, etc.)
I'm guessing that we cannot use the style attribute because of vandalism issues. However, with the inclusion of sysops and the volunteer Community - Team - Anti-Vandalism, the issue becomes negligible. Baldwin 26-Nov-2011 01:59 GMT
- Against It wouldn't be solved by just sysops. You can make it impossible to click on links outside the page, make pages ridiculously long, hide adverts, etc. Not sure we really need this right now. I don't see the lack of alteration as an issue personally, it prevents chaos. Until we find specific cases where style is required I'm not convinced. King Runite129-Nov-2011 18:56 GMT

- Given that some vandalism can take a while to be reverted, I can't see this being a great idea - it allows more significant vandalism and has little use aside from certain templates (but JMods can already do it for us). Yes it will let us make pretty community pages, but is that really worth the vandalism? - Loggy C 21-Dec-2011 10:00 GMT
Hovering Images
I suggest that when hovering images, it shows the hover text just like text links do. (Example: Hover this, a box pops up that says "Oak logs"). If two similar looking images (like oak logs & normal logs) are on a page, users can't really tell which image is what without clicking the images. I think it would be best of users could specify images hover text like we specify caption text.
- Comment: What would you want it to say: Image:Oak_logs.png or Oak logs? Note that there's a link= param for images that aren't framed or thumbnail King Runite1 03-Dec-2011 21:09 GMT
- I think it would be best if we could specify the hover text. Or an alternative would be that if link= is specified, the hover text would say the name of the article that it's linking to. If no link= is specified, the hover text could say the file name of the image or no hover text at all, I don't mind. (I added some of this response to my suggestion description) - Altherat 04-Dec-2011 03:44 GMT
String Functions
For those who are fluent in programming, string functions can be particularly useful for templates.
I can't post an external link, but it's MediaWiki's Extension:StringFunctions article.
The examples I can think of at the top of my head are...
-
- Detecting if a creative work page has a prefix of "Community -" (as namespace is not used, unusually)
- Completing the quick find code template by replacing all hyphens with a comma and adding the URL
-
- This isn't necessarily needed, as you can use the quick find code form by URL and that will automatically parse it
- Detecting long title names for community pages
- Changing the new {{NewsLink}} so it requires only one input
Example: {{NewsLink|rogues-den-%2B-tweaks|Rouges Den + Tweaks}} could be simplified to {{NewsLink|Rouges Den + Tweaks}}
Along other potential needs that would arise. Immortalized 04-Dec-2011 03:11 GMT

Math functions
An extension that lets us use basic math functions. Such as floor().
- Calculating both alchemy prices on one input
- Predictions using math
- Ability to round numbers down or up
- Ability to calculate combat level
- Making calculators

Members Content template and GE Details
This might need someone to write an extension, but could it be possible to make the {{Members_Content}} display a different message if the user is already a member? It doesn't matter, but there seems no reason to tell a member to subscribe.
Can you update the template to have the member badge on it?
Here's my suggestion:
This content is only accessible to RuneScape Members. Please (subscribe link) to get this feature.
Could {{GELink}} say the actual price of an item instead of "GE Details"? Keeping it as a link, but using the price as the name of the link. And letting us use a parameter as well (example: {{GELink|123|GE Details}} would render as it currently is). Immortalized 07-Dec-2011 09:23 GMT

Can you upload the in game font as a web font so we can use it on the wiki?
There's not much use for it now, but with some styling certain things could be recreated, like NPC dialogues, shop menus, quest interfaces, etc.

Need more table styling
I believe the prettytablehalf was tweaked recently, as it used to show about 60-70% of the table instead of 50% as it does now.
I would really appreciate if we could choose the width % of the table, it would really help in the formatting of many pages.

QFC template
I don't know why but there are two QFC templates now.

No index
Any chance of a function that would allow us to escape the indexing of search engines that would allow us to use the QFC template in such a way that it doesn't log you out? I'm not sure where the template is in use at the moment, but if it's used by players to list threads on their community pages then it would probably work. I understand the current template functions as such to escape rant threads being indexed, but if the page the link is on can't be indexed then perhaps the template could perform a little better?

The Search mechanics
Right now, searching for something gives you a list of pages that match your query. It would cut out some of the navigation difficulty if the searchbox took you directly to the page with the name you typed in, if it existed. I heard from many that this wiki is still hard to navigate, hopefully it might rectify that. However, keeping the ability to also search the way it does now would be useful for some things. How about:
- The event bound to Enter directs you to the page
- The "Search" button does not direct you to the page
- A new "Go" button that does direct you to the page.
I'm almost certain I've suggested this somewhere before, but I haven't heard anything about it for a long time. - Loggy C 15-May-2012 14:53 BST
Blacklisting page titles
There are a couple of pages that I've seen recreated (and deleted) that fall into one (or more) of the following categories:
- URLs and derivatives. I seriously doubt that an actual game entity will be added to the game that's called "http ://some.thing.like.this" (even the spam filter doesn't let me save the true title!).
- Forum QFCs. Lots of people have been making pages that match the regular expression "\d?\d\d-\d?\d\d-\d\d\d-\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d" and comments pages of these, and again I don't see any legitimate need for these.
- Various words that are blocked by the in-game profanity filter. Don't think I really need to elaborate here.
