| Denulth | Sabbot's cave | Freda | Dunstan |
Speak to Denulth and ask if he has any quests for you. Offer to look for another path to Death Plateau.
Travel past the ramparts that are to the west of the castle, beyond the bodies of several fallen trolls, and go into the cave with a dwarf inside called Sabbot. You should ask him if he knows another way up to Death Plateau. After convincing him that he should help you (be very, very persistent) he will direct you to Freda, his wife, a little way west of his cave.
Follow the path west, turning left at a wounded soldier to take an elevated path to Freda's house in the south-west. Freda will ask you to get Dunstan to put new spikes on her climbing boots.
Head back to Burthorpe and speak to Dunstan outside his shop in the north of the town. He'll be suspicious, but happy to help spike the boots. Travel back to Freda to give her the boots. You will then be given a survey with the location of the path.
You need to take the survey to Sabbot in his cave, north-east of Freda's house. He will be able to highlight the section of wall where the path leads from, so that you can break it open using a pickaxe. You should mine the wall in the north-west of the cave, as illustrated in the image.

With the wall broken, you should travel through the hole, and down the cliffside. This is a network of caves that will require you to be nimble of feet if you are to get through. Firstly, travel east through a small gap, and then jump the crevice to the south-east. Moving south, you will be able to swing across a gap using a vine, before traveling west across some stepping stones and then south through a gap. All that's left is to climb up a cliffside and out into the fresh air.
After a short cutscene, you will be confronted by The Map, a troll who you will have to fight. He is level 5, and has a deft uppercut. For most, however, he shouldn't be much of a problem if you prepare well with good armour, food and weaponry. Once defeated, the way is clear. It is time to report your findings to Denulth, back in Burthorpe, who may have future tasks for you involving restocking the archers' supplies. The ambush point is secure!
With the quest complete, you may want to speak to Commander Denulth again as he has a repeatable task for you to perform. Every 2 levels over level 10, and up to level 20, you can perform this task for an XP reward.

In Burthorpe, Denulth wants to find another route to Death Plateau since his soldiers keep getting injured by the trolls. He wants the adventurer to find another way up there. The adventurer finds an injured soldier near the warning sign and he tells him/her that an old dwarf named Sabbot lives near the cave near him. Sabbot won't tell him/her about the other route so the adventurer becomes increasingly persistent for him. He tells him/her that the better way to go to the plateau is to break into a natural cave so he directs him/her to his wife Freda, who seems to prefer going overground rather than underground.
Freda would help by filling in a survey for the Imperial Guard but tells him/her that she needs her climbing boots re-spiked by Dunstan in Burthorpe. When Dunstan sees the boots, he recognizes the boots as Freda's and the adventurer explains the situation to him. He happily re-spikes the boots and Freda will finish the survey just as the adventurer gives her the boots. The adventurer follows the map to Sabbot's cave and mines the western wall, which reveals a huge cavern. Sabbot gives him/her four rabbit sandwiches before they leave since he doesn't like rabbit sandwiches.
He/she goes through the cavern using their agility skills and at the other side, he/she encounters The Map, a troll which is named after eating a map. The Map is planning to invade Burthorpe with the other trolls but he eats the other trolls as they became lost and they needed food. The Map is killed in battle and the adventurer reports back to Denulth, who soon plans a surprised attack on the trolls.
