Death runes are used in the Magic skill as they are required for spells in each spellbook. In the Standard spellbook, they are used in Slayer Dart and Teleport Block. In the Ancient spellbook, they are used in Rush and Burst spells. In the Lunar spellbook, they are used in the Vengeance Other, Vengeance, and Vengeance Group spells.

Death runes can be "runecrafted" from Pure essence at the Death Altar by members with a Runecrafting skill level of 65 or higher after completing the Mourning's Ends Part II quest.
