The dragon pickaxe is a Mining tool and basic melee weapon, which requires level-60 Attack to wield and level-61 Mining to use for mining rocks. It is currently the fastest pickaxe in the game (except for the imcando pickaxe, which is faster only in the Lava Flow Mine). It is about 0.3 game ticks on average (0.6 seconds) faster than the rune pickaxe and inferno adze. 60 Attack and 61 Mining are required to wield the pickaxe.

After a player receives the full golden mining suit, the dragon pickaxe can be gilded by the liquid gold nymph in the Lava Flow Mine to become the gilded dragon pickaxe. A gilded dragon pickaxe gives no bonuses and is purely cosmetic.

Dragon pickaxes were released with the Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf quest on 9th September 2009. They are a very rare drop from chaos dwogres, chaos dwarf hand cannoneers and the chaos dwarves on the Chaos Dwarf Battlefield.

While it is not designed to be a melee weapon, the dragon pickaxe has a special attack called Shock which drains an opponent's Ranged, Magic, and Attack levels by 5% and uses 100% adrenaline.

Miscellaneous

  • An earlier concept of a dragon pickaxe was first seen on the RuneScape highscores in 2006 more than 3 years before its actual release. At RuneFest 2011 members of the QA team mentioned that the problem with this version was that it looked too much like an umbrella from certain angles.
