As of January 11th 2012, all new Jagex game accounts have needed a contact email address to act as their login name and their main means of controlling changes on their account.
This has provided an extra level of security to new accounts, as well as to any players with Pre January 11th 2012 accounts, allowing a player to quickly and easily recover their account if the password is forgotten by the owner or changed by someone else.
As a thank-you to everyone one who has already registered an email address, or who now opts to add one to their account, we are giving out the following in-game rewards to each account with a validated email set:
So with the enhanced account security, extra ease of password recovery , and free game items there is no reason not to register a valid email address with us as soon as possible.

If your account was made before January 11th 2012 and you have not already set your recovery email address, or there is not currently a validated email set on your account, then there is a quick and simple way to register and validate an email address on your account.
1. Log into the Account Settings Account Settings section of your account.
2. . Select the "Email & Communication Preferences" section of your account and then enter the email you wish to register.
Once the email has been sent you will see the message
3. Check your email account for the confirmation message sent by Jagex. This should be with you in one minute but it can take a bit longer to get to you, depending on your email provider. It is always worth making sure that the message hasn't been sent to your Spam folder.

The quickest way to validate your email is to click on the link in the email. Before clicking on the link you should always make sure the email is from Jagex.
If you wish to enter the code into RuneScape.com manually then you should go to the Code Entry section of Email & Communication Preferences in Account Settings
4. Once the email has been successfully validated you will see this screen.
If you change email service provider, lose access to an email account or just want to change where your emails are going then we have a quick and simple process for setting a new email address to your account:
To register the account you will need to
1. Log into the Account Settings Account Settings section of your account.
2. Select the "Email & Communication Preferences" section of your account and then click on the "Click Here" link to have an email sent to your current address..
If this is succesful you will then see this screen
3. Open the email from us (subject: Email Address Change Request) and click the link inside. Check your junk/spam folder if you can't find it!
4. On the resulting page, enter your new email address in both boxes. 
We'll send a confirmation email to your new registered address. This new email address will be used to reset your password in future.
5. Open the email (subject: Confirm Your Email Address) and click the link inside to finish the process. 
There is the possibility that you may get an error code at this point. The following table explains what each of the errors means and what you should do to resolve the issue:

| An internal error has occurred. | There has been a problem on our side. You'll need to wait an hour or so before trying again. |
| The submitted code has expired. | You only have so long to activate your email address. If your code has expired, you will need to go through the process again. |
| The code has already been submitted. | There can only be one active code at any time. If your email is still not validated, have a look through your email inbox for a more recent code. |
| You have provided an invalid address. | Check that your new email address was entered correctly into both boxes. |
| The confirmation address does not match the new address. | Check that your new email address was entered correctly into both boxes. |
| You do not have an eligible email address for the receipt of a re-sent validation code. | You have asked us to resend you a verification code but you do not have an email address entered into our website for us to send one to. You'll need to go through the registration process again. |
| You have sent too many requests in a short period of time. | To prevent hijacking, we limit the number of attempts you can make to register an email. Try again in an hour or so. |
Please note that it is not possible to change your Login email address for your Jagex game account. The login can never be changed on an account, although the email that messages are sent to can, and it will stay the same regardless of any changes that may happen to your account.
