Meeting the Wanderer
Before you start this quest, have a pet cat/kitten following you or in your inventory. You'll need it throughout the quest, and this walkthrough assumes it is always with you.
Start by speaking to the Wanderer, whose tent is southwest of Nardah and northwest of the Agility Pyramid (check the world map if you aren't sure.) She'll ask you to get a tinderbox and a full waterskin - if you aren't carrying these items you can get them from Al Kharid and the Shantay Pass respectively. Once you give her the items, a scene will play and you'll find yourself in front of a pyramid in Sophanem.
The first flashback
Touch the pyramid door next to you (marked with a cat symbol) and you'll trigger a flashback. It seems you're inside the pyramid and must retrieve a canopic jar. Pass the wall crushers by running diagonally between them. Once you pass the final crusher, STOP as you must now navigate some hidden pit traps. Use the image below to find a safe path through the traps - if you fall through one you'll be injured and returned to the entrance ladder.
Now run through the pyramid, avoiding any mummies and scarab swarms you encounter, until you reach a large pit blocking your path. You'll need at least 20% run energy to jump over and it is possible to fail the jump, so take a rest before making the attempt. Once you make it across, take the west path and you'll find a door sealed with a puzzle.
You must flip the tiles so that they all reveal a gold image - when you flip a tile all the tiles adjacent to it will also flip. The image on the right shows one possible solution - keep resetting the solution until you get this image, then flip the tiles in the given order to solve it. Once you've done it, the flashback will end and you'll reappear outside the pyramid, this time with a canopic jar in your inventory. Examine it to find out its design and record this information for later, then speak to the Sphinx wandering just northeast of the pyramid.
The sphinx's riddle
Ask the Sphinx for help and it will set you a riddle: A mother and father have six sons, and each son has one sister. How many people are there in the family? The correct answer is nine - if you answer wrongly, the Sphinx will take your cat and you'll have to get another from Gertrude near Varrock. If you are correct, the Sphinx will give you its token and tell you to speak to the High Priest, who can be found in the building west of the pyramid you were exploring.
With the token in your possession the High Priest will speak to you. He will ask you to return the canopic jar to the pyramid so that its inhabitant, Klenter, can rest in peace. Go back to the pyramid entrance and pass through the door to go back inside.
Inside the pyramid
To get to the burial chamber just do the same things you did during the first flashback (see that section again if you need a reminder.) When you open the burial chamber, a second flashback will begin and you'll need to steal the correct canopic jar - hopefully you examined the jar you had earlier to find out which one you need, but if not just try them all. When you try to take the correct jar, a level-80 guardian will appear that you must fight. Be prepared for magic or melee attacks depending on which guardian appears.
Once the guardian is dispatched, take the canopic jar and leave the room, then jump over the pit again to end the flashback. Back in the present, enter the burial chamber again and drop the canopic jar in the spot you took it from. You can now leave the pyramid and return to the High Priest to report your success. He needs you to speak with the carpenter and embalmer to prepare for a burial ceremony.
The carpenter and the embalmer
Go east of the pyramid you've been exploring to find the carpenter's house, and tell him the High Priest needs a holy symbol. The carpenter needs some willow logs, so give him some if you have them or teleport back to the northern lands to cut/buy some. Once the carpenter has the logs he'll need some time to make the symbol, so find the embalmer south of the High Priest's building.
The embalmer says he needs linen, sap and salt for the burial ceremony.
- Linen can be purchased from Raetun on the east side of Sophanem for 30 gold pieces.
- Sap can be obtained by taking a bucket and knife, and using the knife on an evergreen tree.
- Salt can be obtained by collecting a bucket of water from the lake north of Sophanem (you are now allowed to use the city gates for faster access.) Once you've got the water, use it on the pillar at the mirrors in the southeast corner of Sophanem to evaporate it. Now search the pillar to get the salt.
Once you've got all the items, take them to the embalmer who will ask you to speak to the High Priest. The priest believes that the carpenter has finished making the holy symbol, so return to him to collect it. Now that everything is prepared for the ceremony, you need to go back inside the pyramid.
The third flashback
Back inside the pyramid again, repeat the process of trap-dodging and running past enemies until you reach the giant pit. Try to jump across it, and another flashback will start. It seems you must hide an unholy symbol inside the chamber to the east of the pit, so go inside there and place the symbol inside one of the sarcophagi. Exit the chamber and the flashback will end.
Back in the present, you'll realise that the ceremony is taking place in the room where you hid the unholy symbol. Jump over the pit, head inside that chamber and try to warn the priests. The Devourer will appear and possess one of the priests, so you'll have to fight him - he uses magic, so if you have the Protect from Magic prayer it will be much easier to kill him. Once he's been dealt with, speak to the High Priest again so he can finish the ceremony.
The High Priest is grateful for your assistance and asks you to meet him back at the temple. When you leave the room, a final flashback will play. Once it ends, leave the pyramid and find the High Priest in his temple again to finish up. Quest complete!
