Attention Windows 8 Users, if you're finding difficulty in applying tips from this wiki, please follow these instructions.
Hi. Congratulations on your purchase of a laptop computer and welcome, if you're looking for performance optimisation tips for laptops this is the right place to look!
Some of you guys/girls may know most laptops these days are built with dynamic power saving options/features that help lower power usage+ maximise battery performance this is why HP, Dell, Lenovo and other vendors always get Energy Star or EPEAT certifications. HP laptops are like 90% EPEAT silver+ certified I believe, the last time I checked.
Now we'll tell you exactly how to allow applications not only Runescape, to harness your laptop's computing power to its best while maximising your laptop's lifespan in the long run.
Our tips here are built upon the contextual knowledge of actual laptop enthusiasts that have several years of work and usage experiences with laptops. We're extremely proud of the generosity of these enthusiasts in sharing their "know hows", "tips/protips", ingenious "workarounds" & lastly game tips shared by Runescape players and some Jagex support staff.
Article Objective
This guide aims to tell exactly how to prepare the system for performance. Since these systems are likely to use the lower powered settings as a default option.

Recovery procedures to restore computers back to functional states are mentioned and applies to specific sections of this guide where at rare occasions, the recovery feature might come in useful due to the fact that certain tweaks discussed creates a low possibility that the computer may turn to a temporarily non-functional state due to unintended compatibility issues by the software provider.
We are not responsible for any loss of data/ damage caused by inadequate amounts of safeguard and/or safety procedures put in place, therefore, you should always backup your important data before beginning.
All contents here do not mention of overclocking and other tasks enthusiasts may perform and are suitable for people even with low amounts of technical knowledge.
Other Important Notes
Please note that some sections this guide are generally tuned for use by HP users. However, most of the settings here are generic tweaks that can be tweaked similarly/in a same manner even if you have a laptop of a different brand. The naming convention of similar but non-windows features of other brands might be slightly different.

Unfortunately, this guide will not apply to Apple laptops unless you run Windows on it.
BIOS refer to the Basic Input/Output System and basically it is a graphic user interface you can get access to for adjusting some of your system settings of your laptop's motherboard. What this action aims to do is simply to turn dynamic graphics mode (aka hybrid graphics mode) to fixed (aka Switchable Graphics mode) for performance enhancements. Step 3 does not apply to laptops with only Integrated Graphics.

If your Alienware M17x or M18x notebook is running Nvidia Optimus or AMD Enduro - allowing the system to run only on the dedicated graphic card without being routed through the integrated graphics for more performance. There is an inherent loss of performance in Optimus or Enduro technologies because the graphic capabilities will have to pass through the Intel HD even if graphics render on the discrete card.
The tweak below aims to bypass Optimus/Enduro:
'*Only later revisions of M17x & M18x (typically R3 and above) models officially support the capability of disabling Dynamic Switchable Graphics. '*Unfortunately for R4 units, Dell has not added the capability to disable Nvidia Optimus while systems running AMD Radeon HD 7970M are able to disable Enduro.
Basically power plans are pre-specified adjustable parameters relating to system performance and power usage. Switching to the "High Performance" power plan allows the system to increase its performance within the manufacturer set limits.

This only applies if you have a discrete class GPU embedded into your laptop. They're non-Intel based graphic cards by Nvidia or AMD.
Note: It is advised to complete tip 2.1 because it generally brings better graphical performance to the system and that its related to this tip. Though if you're a road warrior always on the move, Hybrid graphics (Dynamic) would be your preferred graphics mode because of better ease of switching between the Intel HD and the AMD GPU.

Both Direct X and OpenGL will make proper use of graphical hardware as opposed to Safe Mode and Software. As such, you'll notice your gameplay to be a lot smoother in Direct X and OpenGL. Graphical work runs better on top of graphics accelerated modes because it takes the graphical work off the processor which isn't designed to handle graphics.
Processing of the graphical work is done through any of the following types of hardware will be a lot smoother than running graphical work on a CPU alone:

The optimal graphical settings listed below may not be 100% accurate. These suggestions are made on the general consensus made by players holding these Nvidia and AMD based notebooks. You may attempt running Runescape in both Direct X and OpenGL for performance comparisons.
These are the general optimal setting:

This is largely due to the fact that Intel HD drives have extremely old versions of OpenGL renderers, specifically OpenGL 3.x running in them. Only Intel HD graphics on a 3rd Gen Core i processor uses an updated OpenGL 4.2.
Performance throttling software is designed to improve thermal management. Simply, once the laptop's GPU or CPU reaches a certain pre-set temperature, the software will adjust the system settings to slow the computer and this will reduce the operating temperature.

Note: Only applies to Intel Based Core i 5 or 7 Processors (i3 laptops are not affected because they don't have turboboost, skip this)
Why should I do this?
Overview
Turboboost, is Intel's implementation of automated CPU minor overclocking. It basically tweaks the CPU frequencies above its specified performance. Assuming the temperatures are right. In reality, most implementations of turboboost do not care about heat. They usually would run turboboost at all times, even on high temperatures.

Max state for battery depends on your needs and how much battery life you want out of your system. Trial and error for optimal settings. Note that running on battery without the charger does trigger the battery power plan. You may want to tweak multiple power plans to suit your needs.
Will my computer slow down?
Yes, slightly. Bear in mind this is a setting. You can easily turn Turboboost back on simply by changing the maximum processor state to 100%
Note: These settings can only be tweaked on systems running Windows Vista/7 and 8. This section also does not apply to systems running Windows XP.
Why should I do this?
Passive Cooling Policy
The passive cooling policy specifies to your computer that once your computer temperature meets a manufacturer-set limit, the laptop will be instructed to throttle performance. What this means is that if you were to use performance intensive applications (i.e. games), you'll experience gradual performance degradation until the system temperature goes below the limit.
If temperature still continues to rise or remain above the threshold, your system will then be instructed to turn up its CPU/GPU fan speed to cool the system further.
Active Cooling Policy
The active cooling policy works differently from the passive policy. Once the system is detected to be running above the manufacturer temperature threshold, your system will be immediately instructed to turn up the CPU/GPU fan speed while maintaining the optimal performance you're getting.
In essence, running the active cooling policy is a more effective than passive.
Note: As fan speeds may be turned up more frequently while running the active cooling policy, you will notice that your computer fan sounds louder than it would while running passive. In other words, the passive policy could also be well used at extremely quiet environments such as libraries to prevent disruption/annoyance to others.
Tell me about using the "Active Cooling Policy"
Basically, the graphics drivers tell the computer what the hardware actually is, what it does and how it runs and how are the graphics card features utilised. Without manufacturer/ OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) provided drivers or even up-to-date drivers, your computer wouldn't know what special features the graphics card can actually do and of course, the computer would run it without any performance & feature set enhancements.
Before you begin - you'll need the following:
Please note that before performing steps listed on this section, download a copy of your laptop manufacturer's custom drivers from their support website just in case the installation fails. This is not a one of its world kind of issue, it happens from time to time but it is completely reversible.
Why should I update the graphics driver?
When it comes to games, keeping updated graphics drivers are a good practice because ODMs (Original Device Manufacturers) such as AMD and Nvidia will provide reference driver updates and performance enhancements that will make video and games run better and possibly performance frame rate bumps in small increments, especially for the top game titles currently in the market.
It is also inadvisable to use beta drivers since they are released only for testing purposes and are likely to come with stability issues. Also to note, ODMs usually have a set graphics driver release schedule approximately at once a month.
You'll also probably notice your PC manufacturer doesn't update the graphics drivers often if you use their proprietary update tool. To work this around, use ODM provided reference drivers.
Note: It is not possible to use reference drivers on Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic laptops due to manufacturer set restrictions.

Important Note on Catalyst installation files:
This happens occasionally and it isn't rare. AMD may put a hardware ID of a laptop GPU in the desktop Catalyst installation file and vice versa, by accident. Both are unified drivers and are cross-compatible with laptops and desktops, all Catalyst menus will also be available. Your objective would be to find out whether the desktop file or the mobility file contains your GPU's hardware ID. This is demonstrated in step 4 of driver installation section.

If your laptop's plugged to a power cord and you're on a stationary position (i.e. working on a desk), remove the battery because you can use the power cord as the power source - once the charge reaches 100%. Overcharging causes the Li-ion batteries to lose charge faster & battery damage as time passes.
Tell me about removing batteries
Note: Some manufacturers of laptops or specifically Ultra-books are quite inaccessible. To dismount Ultra book batteries, please consult your maintenance guide or manual provided by the manufacturer.
Tell me about battery maintenance by "Power cycling"
Lithium-ion polymer batteries pack in a higher power density than nickel-based batteries. This gives you a longer battery life in a lighter package, as lithium is the lightest metal. You can also recharge a lithium-ion polymer battery whenever convenient, without the full charge or discharge cycle necessary to keep nickel-based batteries at peak performance.
Power Cycling
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally for better charging capacity in the long term. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down to 0%). Especially if you seldom use the battery.
Power cycling in periodic occasions will help reduce the rate of degradation of holding electric charges of your laptop battery.
When should I use the battery?
(Charge the battery till 100% & let it run down to 0)
Another protip: When your battery is done charging, you may unplug the battery without powering down your system.
Condition: Your laptop has to be plugged on to the power brick (AC Adapter) while switching the power source by pulling out the battery. Your system will stay powered on as long as the AC adapter (power brick) is always on. It’s actually pretty convenient.
The main avenue for heat dissipation of the heat generated by the CPU and GPU is the vent usually situated at the side and bottom of the laptop. The problem is that dust and lint will gradually accumulate on the vent, causing blockages and poorer heat dissipation.
What are the tell-tale signs?
You may notice the laptop's fan is getting louder after time. This is not a sign that the fan's going cranky. The system is telling you that heat dissipation has deteriorated and that the fan needs to blow harder in order to cool the system. This is because the fan noise is usually an indication of the fan working harder, or being run at full speed, or both.
Tell me about cleaning the vent
This action may be performed once in a few months and the frequency differs from system to system and real world environment factors.
Note:
Some of you may have heard of these pads without cooling fans. Honestly, it really isn't worth that money you pay for. For USB cooling pads, they may not have fans position under the heating spots of your laptop. So this also reduces the effectiveness of the cooling.
How do I get one free?
Actually you might as well get a few books/magazines and stack them and place it under the back of the laptop near the battery area to improve ergonomics, height and heat dissipation of the laptop. Also prevents the vents from eating dust directly. Make sure you don't cover the vents. It's almost as effective as a passive cooling pad you could get on the market.
In countries with large land masses or those that experience occasional thunderstorms, you may risk getting your electronic devices damaged/fried in the long term due to surge in electrical currents from power sockets.
Tell me about surge protectors
Surge Protectors
Well this mainly applies to people living in countries with a large land mass. Surge protectors are inexpensive devices which protects your electrical appliances from electrical current surges. Many of them are integrated into multi-plug sockets these days. You can usually find such a device sold at hardware stalls or regular retailers that carry some electrical appliances.
OR
Going on Battery
Simply go on to the battery and unplug the charger, if you want sustained high performance while on battery, make sure you tweak the power management options similarly like in step 6. Usually the battery runs out in over an hour this way.
BIOS refers to the Binary Input Output System. basically it is a graphic user interface you can get access to for adjusting some of your system settings of your laptop's motherboard. BIOS updates usually include computer performance improvements, improved thermal management (fan speed updates), controller updates, etc... A BIOS update is irreversible once it starts, make sure the computer wouldn’t shut down and is plugged to a steady power supply.
Tell me about updating the BIOS
Key things to remember:
Updating the BIOS
Note: If the BIOS update is done through Windows, chances are if it fails, the system will be ok. However, if you were to flash BIOS through a floppy disk by booting into it, a failed BIOS flashing may cause your system to be unable to startup.
Please keep in mind that your system type is very important when flashing a new version of your computer's BIOS. Make sure that you check whether you have a 64 bit operating system or a 32 bit operating system and use this if needed when downloading the correct version of BIOS for your computer.
Note: Never perform this tweak on a Solid State Drive (SSD), it will wear out the SSD faster than it should and there are no performance benefits.
Fragmentation only occurs on Windows file systems like FAT32, FAT16 and NTFS due to the way they are designed to work. Fragmentation will leave an increasingly heavy footprint on the computer system's resources because a single file could be segregated over various sectors at different sections of a Hard Disk Drive and this deteriorates file access speeds over time.
The effect of the fragmentation is of course, lower access speeds and slower loading of files - be it while browsing the web, loading your office documents or even games.
How can I defrag my computer?
Note: It takes some time to defrag depending of the amount of files on your computer but it is very well worth the effort and time.
There are 3 popular utilities people use to defrag their hard drives and their features are listed below:
| Feature | Windows "Built-in" Defragmenter | Auslogic's Disk Defragmenter | Smart Defrag 2 by iObit |

Using Windows Built-in Disk Defragger
Recommended For: "Minimalist" setup users - you'd like to minimise the number of softwares installed on your PC.
Use Instructions
| Windows 8/Windows 7/Vista Version |
|---|
| @echo off defrag.exe /c /h /x /v cls |
| Windows XP Version |
| @echo off defrag.exe c: d: -f -v cls |
Note: The defragmentation command below will also display fragmentation statistics before and after defragmentation.
Using Auslogic's disk Defrag

Auslogics Software Pty Ltd | Performance oriented users - high degree of control over the defrag utility with advanced features. | www.auslogics.com/en/downloads/disk-defrag/disk-defrag-setup.exe |
In terms of feature set, Auslogics Disk Defrag is the most advanced, performance oriented defragger among the 3.
Auslogics Disk Defrag has an additional plus of an additional "optimise" feature which is capable of positioning frequently accessed files such as system files as in the outermost rim of a hard disk over the other 2 defraggers.
If you could imagine, the outermost rim spins the quickest per round as opposed to the inner rim; the highest distance is travelled per round and it translates to faster data reading/writing rates. In the case of computers with the use of Auslogics Disk Defrag, this allows the hard disk to quickly read, write and access the system files and can potentially reduce computer startup and shutdown times.
Use Instructions
1. First run ONLY
2. Subsequent runs, (after doing first run instructions)
Options & Features
If you want to make sure that your computer’s hard drive stays fast, defrag your computer at least once every one week and optimise it every two weeks.
Using iObit Smart Defrag 2

iObit | "No -Frills" users - you'd like everything to be handled by softwares automatically, under the hood. | files6.majorgeeks.com/files/b0a4fed42fc9723fc5ef166da6e25614/drives/defragsetup.exe |
Among the 3 defraggers recommended, this is second in place in terms of feature set. Though, its plus over the other 2 defraggers are its high degrees of automation which can be added to this defragger. This is the most "hassle free" among the 3.
Use Instructions
1. First run ONLY
Go to Settings, under General Settings, check the following:
For user who would like to run "idle-time" defrag where Smart Defrag starts defragging each time you leave your computer unattended:
2. Subsequent runs, (after doing first run instructions)
Note: "Idle-time" defrag users will not have to manually execute the defragmentation command. However, iObit Smart Defrag 2 does not have advanced algorithms that place system & OS files on the hard drive. It will be defragged, as is, as though system files are just regular files.
Here are some temperature monitoring tools. You can actually monitor operating temperatures before and after performing the optimisation tips!
Before using the following direct download links to the ODM's site, please ensure you have read the instructions provided at Update Graphics Drivers before proceeding. Links provided here are for drivers that are digitally signed by AMD/Nvidia and are distributed as official releases.
Links to betas/leaked betas are not available on this Wiki. Beta drivers may come with stability issues, use them at your own discretion if you desire.
Old drivers are listed here to assist you in troubleshooting stability issues you may experience while installing drivers of newer versions. This happens from time to time. So here they are:
