If you have had performed step 1.1

4. Options are proceed and cancel, select proceed (if there are active programs that did not quit, Nvidia control panel greys the proceed option)

To switch to the Intel graphic media accelerator integrated GPU, select power saving mode for the power plan and perform the rest of the steps in the same manner mentioned above.

Note: If nothing pops up for step 3, look at the taskbar tray icon for a green "<<<" icon with an exclamation mark, click it for the prompt on switching graphics.

This applies to laptops running Intel Core i ONLY

For Hybrid Graphics Enabled Laptops (If hybrid graphics cannot be disabled on your laptop)

1. Right click on your desktop background, select "Nvidia Control Panel", enter

To tweak your display mode settings

• Open a Runescape window
• Hit the wrench icon at the top left corner in the lobby (Hit the wrench icon in the game interface for settings in-game)
• Hit Display Settings
• Hit Custom
• Select OpenGL or DirectX

The optimal graphical settings listed below may not be 100% accurate. These suggestions are made on the general consensus made by players holding these Nvidia and AMD based notebooks. You may attempt running Runescape in both Direct X and OpenGL for performance comparisons.

These are the general optimal setting:

OpenGL:

• GT 400M based graphic cards (Fermi codenamed)
• GT 500M based graphic cards (Fermi codenamed)
• GT 610-635M based graphic cards (Fermi codenamed)

Direct X:

• Everything else not mentioned in the OpenGL section. This includes the latest Kepler codenamed graphic cards. Kepler (GeForce) consumer cards are also quite badly optimised for OpenGL unlike its enterprise/professional variants (Kepler, Quadro).

Reason: Direct X tends to run at better frame rates on most of these GPUs.

• Practically all Intel integrated graphics hardware running Runescape have a preference of Direct X over OpenGL. It is likely that a user can observe that OpenGL runs extremely poor on Intel HD graphics.

This is largely due to the fact that Intel HD drives have extremely old versions of OpenGL renderers, specifically OpenGL 3.x running in them. Only Intel HD graphics on a 3rd Gen Core i processor uses an updated OpenGL 4.2.

Overview
Turboboost, is Intel's implementation of automated CPU minor overclocking. It basically tweaks the CPU frequencies above its specified performance. Assuming the temperatures are right. In reality, most implementations of turboboost do not care about heat. They usually would run turboboost at all times, even on high temperatures.

Turboboost (Overclock) Benefits

• Better CPU performance - Turboboost probably provides a 10% bump.
• However, Runescape can run perfectly smooth on an i3, i5 or i7 without the help of Turboboost, the rest of the performance depends on the graphics card.

Turboboost Harms

• Core i Processors (Especially Gen 2 and 3) run a lot hotter than their predecessors, Core 2 and earlier - smaller die and package with yet more transistors.
• On most laptops, graphics cards and the processor shares a same heat sink and fan.
• Laptop cooling designs have not largely improved over the years, the increased heat load will cause systems to run constantly near temperature limits when on load.
• Significantly increased risks of overheating / laptop damage.

Disabling Turboboost - Benefits

• Longer laptop lifespan.
• Lower CPU operating temperature effectively by at least 10+°C when on RS, Java, Flash and other CPU intensive programs .
• Decreased fan noise (acoustics)
• Greatly reduced risk of overheating.
• Increased system longevity.

Passive Cooling Policy

The passive cooling policy specifies to your computer that once your computer temperature meets a manufacturer-set limit, the laptop will be instructed to throttle performance. What this means is that if you were to use performance intensive applications (i.e. games), you'll experience gradual performance degradation until the system temperature goes below the limit.

If temperature still continues to rise or remain above the threshold, your system will then be instructed to turn up its CPU/GPU fan speed to cool the system further.

Active Cooling Policy

The active cooling policy works differently from the passive policy. Once the system is detected to be running above the manufacturer temperature threshold, your system will be immediately instructed to turn up the CPU/GPU fan speed while maintaining the optimal performance you're getting.

In essence, running the active cooling policy is a more effective than passive.

Note: As fan speeds may be turned up more frequently while running the active cooling policy, you will notice that your computer fan sounds louder than it would while running passive. In other words, the passive policy could also be well used at extremely quiet environments such as libraries to prevent disruption/annoyance to others.

When it comes to games, keeping updated graphics drivers are a good practice because ODMs (Original Device Manufacturers) such as AMD and Nvidia will provide reference driver updates and performance enhancements that will make video and games run better and possibly performance frame rate bumps in small increments, especially for the top game titles currently in the market.

It is also inadvisable to use beta drivers since they are released only for testing purposes and are likely to come with stability issues. Also to note, ODMs usually have a set graphics driver release schedule approximately at once a month.

You'll also probably notice your PC manufacturer doesn't update the graphics drivers often if you use their proprietary update tool. To work this around, use ODM provided reference drivers.

Note: It is not possible to use reference drivers on Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic laptops due to manufacturer set restrictions.

Catalyst 13.4 WHQL (April 2013) is currently the latest WHQL certified driver**.

In most instances, the driver installation process will cause your screen to flicker at specific phases during the installation. This is completely normal.

1. Product Compatibility

  • For ATi/AMD Radeon HD 2000-4000M, please visit the older drivers section for Catalyst 12.4, the next closest driver version because your graphics card has been phased out by AMD.

Highlights:This driver contains complete fixes to the long standing issue with GPU underutilisation under hybrid mode while on DirectX 9, 10 and 11. As Runescape is running Direct X 9, you'll receive performance bumps out of this driver. The 13.4 release adds further frame latency improvements.

Catalyst 13.4 requires the installation of Microsoft .Net Framework 4, as opposed to .Net Framework 3.5 on previous 2012 Catalyst (12.8 and earlier) releases.

• Enter your product number or product model number to get to the appropriate driver page
• Select the OS you're using
• Locate the ATI/AMD driver/chipset installation file tagged under the chipset or video driver section

Important Note on Catalyst installation files:
This happens occasionally and it isn't rare. AMD may put a hardware ID of a laptop GPU in the desktop Catalyst installation file and vice versa, by accident. Both are unified drivers and are cross-compatible with laptops and desktops, all Catalyst menus will also be available. Your objective would be to find out whether the desktop file or the mobility file contains your GPU's hardware ID. This is demonstrated in step 4 of driver installation section.

1. Go to your Control Panel->Uninstall a program
2. Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager, select the uninstall option-> Custom-> Next to selectively choose which features to remove.
3. In the uninstall page, check all features except AMD Display Driver and select next
   (Leave the Integrated graphics Intel HD drivers alone***)
4. Run the Catalyst software installer, select Install -> Custom -> Make sure you have a checkbox with a black frame around the component, "AMD Display Driver". If this is not present, hit cancel and repeat this step and sure "AMD Display Driver" shows up. This is to ensure the installation file has detected your graphics hardware.
5. If step 3 succeeds, make sure all components are selected and hit next to finish the installation.
6. (Only if it fails) Uninstall Catalyst and begin from step 1 again.

• It is not possible to use reference drivers on Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic laptops due to manufacturer set restrictions.
• Both AMD and Nvidia highly recommend that you perform a clean uninstallation before proceeding with the new driver installation. Unlike other software, installing new graphics drivers over old ones can cause stability issues _[1][2].

2. If you have had Java 7 installed and its completely functional and fluid, use it instead of downgrading to Java 6. If it doesn't work for you or that it stutters more in Java 7, you'll have to stick with Java 6.

1. start "hp support assistant", enter
2. hit maintain
3. hit the refresh button, you'll get a list of updates available for your laptop
4. check the updates you want and hit install, they're tagged with a "update priority"

You can also recharge a lithium-ion polymer battery whenever convenient, without the full charge or discharge cycle necessary to keep nickel-based batteries at peak performance.

Power Cycling

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally for better charging capacity in the long term. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down to 0%). Especially if you seldom use the battery.

Power cycling in periodic occasions will help reduce the rate of degradation of holding electric charges of your laptop battery.

You may notice the laptop's fan is getting louder after time. This is not a sign that the fan's going cranky. The system is telling you that heat dissipation has deteriorated and that the fan needs to blow harder in order to cool the system. This is because the fan noise is usually an indication of the fan working harder, or being run at full speed, or both.

1. Using canned air or any other forms of compressed air and aim it at an angle right towards the dust pieces in order to loosen them,

Actually you might as well get a few books/magazines and stack them and place it under the back of the laptop near the battery area to improve ergonomics, height and heat dissipation of the laptop. Well this mainly applies to people living in countries with a large land mass. Surge protectors are inexpensive devices which protects your electrical appliances from electrical current surges. Many of them are integrated into multi-plug sockets these days. You can usually find such a device sold at hardware stalls or regular retailers that carry some electrical appliances.

Simply go on to the battery and unplug the charger, if you want sustained high performance while on battery, make sure you tweak the power management options similarly like in step 6. Usually the battery runs out in over an hour this way.

Key things to remember:

1. Read the release notes
2. See if the release notes is addressing the problem you are experiencing with your own system.
3. If nothing like that has ever occurred on your system and everything seems fully functional, chances are that you might not want to update your computer's BIOS

1. Go to your PC manufacturer's site, click support & drivers
2. Search for your exact laptop model (example: DV6t 7123us)
3. Select the correct version of windows(You can check your version of windows by going to start, right clicking 'My Computer" and clicking 'properties'. Make sure you take in account your system type, 32 bit, or 64 bit included.)
4. Expand the BIOS section and download the file
5. Run the application downloaded; you will be at a screen which tells you your current version and which version you are attempting to install
6. Confirm it when you are ready, DO NOT USE THE LAPTOP WHILE BIOS IS FLASHING.
7. Restart when the update is complete.
8. Do not remove power from your computer for any reason, this could cause irreversible damage to your motherboard.

Note: If the BIOS update is done through Windows, chances are if it fails, the system will be ok. However, if you were to flash BIOS through a floppy disk by booting into it, a failed BIOS flashing may cause your system to be unable to startup.

Please keep in mind that your system type is very important when flashing a new version of your computer's BIOS. Make sure that you check whether you have a 64 bit operating system or a 32 bit operating system and use this if needed when downloading the correct version of BIOS for your computer.

Note: It takes some time to defrag depending of the amount of files on your computer but it is very well worth the effort and time.

There are 3 popular utilities people use to defrag their hard drives and their features are listed below:

Recommended For: "Minimalist" setup users - you'd like to minimise the number of softwares installed on your PC.

Microsoft Windows Disk Defragmenter (Elevated Command Prompt) fragmentation analysis results.

Use Instructions

• Please ensure you're logged on to an Administrator account or this feature will be disabled.
• Open notepad and copy the following text into your notepad and save the file as "Disk Defragmenter.bat", preferably on your desktop so you can execute this maintenance feature easily in the future.

• Double click the icon to launch the defragmenter.
• A defragment can take more than an hour to complete and it depends on how often you run the defragmenter.

Note: The defragmentation command below will also display fragmentation statistics before and after defragmentation.

• Once the defragmentation is complete, the command prompt will close automatically. Restart your computer and you should notice a difference in how fast your computer loads files.

In terms of feature set, Auslogics Disk Defrag is the most advanced, performance oriented defragger among the 3.

Auslogics Disk Defrag has an additional plus of an additional "optimise" feature which is capable of positioning frequently accessed files such as system files as in the outermost rim of a hard disk over the other 2 defraggers.

If you could imagine, the outermost rim spins the quickest per round as opposed to the inner rim; the highest distance is travelled per round and it translates to faster data reading/writing rates. In the case of computers with the use of Auslogics Disk Defrag, this allows the hard disk to quickly read, write and access the system files and can potentially reduce computer startup and shutdown times.

2. Automatic Defrag tab, check "Start Auto Defrag when system idle exceeds "x" minutes - my recommendation is 5 minutes.
3. Pause Auto Defrag when resource usage exceeds 20%.
