Linux Known Issues

Here is a list of the most common problems and how to fix them on Linux.
NOTE: Some of these issues are not limited to Linux/Unix, however we provide you the solution to fix them in Linux.

The custom cursors are miss-coloured and they dont change until after i click!

We dont know if this problem is related to Java, RuneScape or Linux/Unix systems yet, if it is bothering you too much then disable custom cursors from the RuneScape Display settings.

I am unable to see the pings of any worlds

Unfortunately, seeing the ping of a world is a Windows only feature, but the functionality can be replicated rather easily

When using 1 of the UNIX clients I get a black error window!

A picture showing the Error window caused by the possible reasons listed to the left.

This can be from 3 reasons.

  1. The official windows & mac clients have been updated.
  2. You need a proxy to access the internet (Only if your network requires a proxy!)
  3. The RuneScape website is down(or at least the game config page is down).

Unable to load game configuration

Please wait and try again later or make sure you are connected to the internet.
There is not much else we can do here.

RuneScape freezes randomly or after a few hours

This is a known issue with Sun/Oracle Java6(this was fixed in Java7) on Linux, please use OpenJDK with the IcedTea plugin instead.
Installation instructions for OpenJDK can be found here.

Official (Windows) client under Wine crashes on 64-bit systems during graphics setup or load

For some users, the official client under Wine is the best option (usually because it provides the best available screen space). This is an issue with some installations of Wine on 64-bit systems. To fix this, open ~/Desktop/RuneScape.desktop in a text editor.

Find the line that says:

Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/[username]/.wine" wine c:\\\\jagexlauncher\\\\jagexlauncher\\\\bin\\\\JagexLauncher.exe runescape

Add the following between "env" and "WINEPREFIX":

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib32:/usr/lib"

The line should read:

Exec=env LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib32:/usr/lib" WINEPREFIX="/home/[username]/.wine" wine c:\\\\jagexlauncher\\\\jagexlauncher\\\\bin\\\\JagexLauncher.exe runescape

After changing size of window client, graphics are messed up

Any of following actions fix it, because they force the window to redraw itself:

  • Minimize, then unminimize the window
  • Roll window into header, then unroll it
  • Switching between virtual desktops (workspaces)

Enabling multicore support

Multicore support or rather multithreading is a hot topic these days. You cannot make RuneScape(the game itself) utilize multiple cores... but you can trick java into using multiple cores when it does garbage collection (which is guaranteed to happen during "Loading - Please Wait...", meaning we can decrease load times between loading boundaries.

Multicore support is enabled by default in the RSU-Client, but if you want to disable it you can do that by opening the Settings Editor and untick "Enable Automatic Java Optimization".

If you want to add multicore support to a different RuneScape Client that is a shellscript you can add these parameters to the launch line. -XX:+UseCompressedOops -XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+TieredCompilation -XX:+UseAdaptiveGCBoundary -XX:SurvivorRatio=16 -XX:+UseParallelGC

Fixes under testing

Head over to the Linux Tips section. As soon as new ways are discovered to make RuneScape on Linux perform better or as good as on any other platform, they will be added there while they are being tested. Later if they are considered make a difference, they will be added to this main article.
