Making new pages

There are several ways to start a new page. These can vary based on the type of page started as well as the namespace.

Using red links

It's very easy to link wiki pages using a standard syntax (see Editing links). If you (or anyone else) create a link to an article that doesn't exist yet, the link will be colored red, like this.

Clicking a red link will take you to the edit page for the new article. Simply type your text, click save and the new page will be created.

Once the page has been created, the link will change from red to gold indicating that the article now exists.

Usually this is the best way to create a new page, because it means that right from the start, the page will be linked from at least one other place on the wiki (and typically you will want to mesh it into other related pages later). If you are creating a new page without creating any link to it, you may need to ask yourself: Does this page really fit in with the topics already covered in the wiki? Also, how are you expecting visitors to find this page? Normally there is no reason to create a page without first creating a red link to it.

Using the URL

You can use the wiki's URL in the address box of your web browser for creating a new page like this:

  • services.runescape.com/m=rswiki/en/PAGENAME

If you replace PAGENAME with the name of the page you wish to create, you will be taken to a blank page which indicates that no article of that name exists yet. Clicking "Edit Page" at the top of the page will take you to the edit page for that article, where you can create the new page by typing your text, and clicking submit.

From the search page

If you search for a page that doesn't exist using a very specific page name (usually with no spaces or spaces replaced with underscores) then you may be provided with a link to create the new page. However, this is unreliable because this wiki isn't currently using the Go button.

Create redirects to your new page

If your new page could be given a number of different names or spellings then set up a Redirect to make it is easier to find. You can create a redirect by typing the following code onto the page you wish to redirect, replacing 'Page Name' with the name of the page you wish to redirect to:

{{Redirect | Page Name}}

A rough guide as to where to put your pages

Is it related to RuneScape? Is it provable by JWP:STTF requirements? What you should do.
Yes Yes It's a normal page, just make it.
Yes No It's a Community Page: name it "Community - <Page Name>" and use a suitable community template at the top to clearly mark that the page is not intended as factual game information.
No N/A Don't put it in the RuneScape wiki until it related to RuneScape
And if it breaks the JWPs just don't put it up here at all.

Deciding on a title

Picking a good title helps people find your page when they want information on that topic. Pick a bad title and people will find it instead of other stuff or won't find it all.

To help people find articles for in-game content, please use the same name that appears in game. For Community content, the choice is yours (but remember to use 'Community' per above).

If there already exists an in-game item with the same article you should consider the relative importance of the article already there. For example, a minor quest item and a item used in the majority of the game, append a suffix to the less important one and consider using the {{About}} template to link from the top of the main article.

For articles of equal importance you might want to use the {{disambiguation}} template to create a introduction page and then add entries for each item. This is also useful if there are lots of possibilities. Note that in some cases this article can hold important general information on it's own.
