Within Melee there are three weapon styles: stab, slash and crush. Certain armours are weak to different styles of attack, so it is always worth considering checking what attack style your weapon performs.
The amount of experience you get from killing an opponent is based upon a number of things.
When training, it may be worth considering your opponents' (player or monster) weaknesses. Certain armours are weak to different weapon styles. The main weapon styles include stab, slash and crush attacks.
For example if your opponent is wearing a light robe material, a slashing weapon such as a scimitar should have no problem tearing through the armour.
Similarly, investigate whether a puncturing stab attack could deal the most damage, or if an aggressive crush attack to smash through armour is necessary.
The experience you receive will vary, depending on the combat level of the monster you are fighting. Using the Combat Experience interface, you can choose where you want your XP to go. For Melee, your choices are:
The Pendant of attack, Pendant of strength, Pendant of defence, Prized pendant of attack, Prized pendant of strength and the Prized pendant of defence can boost your XP gain by 1.5 and 2 times, respectively, while worn. These amulets only have so many charges but can be recharged using small or large recharge gems.
When eaten, amongst other things, the Cavefish increases your Attack, Strength and Defence level by 2.
A red Spicy stew, amongst other things, has a random chance to increase your Attack, Strength and Defence levels by up to 6 levels (or decrease it by the same).
Using the Summoning skill, you'll find that there are a few familiars that might be useful for training your melee capabilities. Many familiars can help you, letting you train for longer and taking some of the heat off you.
